Please help me out, my chipset fan is making weird clicking noises that sound a bit like a floppy drive going at it. When i unplug the chipset fan it goes away. Question one:

Is it safe for me to unplug the chipset fan and not worry about it overheating? I have a nice case (coolermaster cavalier) that has a good airflow, 120mm in the back 80 in the front.

If its not good for the chipset to unplug the fan, what can i do to stop this noise, please help m

(FIXED)

Thanks to all who helped

Well, I have so far been able to avoid boards with chipset coolers w/fans. I have no first hand experience with these, but have picked up a lot here at the forums.

There are options available to you.

If your board is under warranty, the manufacturer will usually send you a replacement.
There are replacement fans that can be bought.
There are heat sinks (larger) that can be bought also. The larger ones will ensure that the chip stays cool enough.

You should post over in Cases & Cooling or maybe Motherboards. Someone over there can most likely tell you whether you can run yours as is.

Probably safe enough. No one should have a clear answer to this because it is subjective to the circumstances of your situation. Monitor the BIOS for temperature info or install a Windows utility. I would start by shutting down the PC and removing the HSF for a compressed air cleaning or replace.

I wasn't aware that you could moniter the temperatures of the Chipset. But I will remove that HSF, but i do not have a replacement for the fan nor compressed air 🙁.

P.S. what are safe temps for the chipset to run at?

Not sure what safe temps for chipset are. Their resilience is varied I'm sure.

You should definately get some compressed air to dust or system against dust, heat and static build up. Meaure the chipset fan width by length and I'll see if I have a replacement.

Yay, i beleive I have fixed it! The wire that connected the NB chipset fan to the Mobo was getting caught in the fan 🙂. Thanks !
