Help! Abit KG7 - Can't get into BIOS screen

System specs:

Abit KG-7 Raid (currently 5e BIOS)
1.25GB DDR 2100
AMD 1.4Ghz 266 CPU

I just swapped out my 900Mhz Athlon with the 1.4Ghz Athlon. After starting up the system, I get "CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded". Once I try and enter select by pressing DELETE, I get a black screen with a solid blue stripe 2 columns high at the bottom with a blinking cursor up top.

I have tried 3 different BIOS versions (5w, 5e, and 4j), as well as I have tried the CMOS discharge jumper, but I still have the problem.

Any help would be greatly appeciated.

Thanks.

Thanks for your response. I just tried putting the 900 back in and I get the same error. I can still run the machine, but I can't get into the BIOS to make any changes.

If anyone has had this problem, please let me know.

Thanks.

have you tried removeing the ATX connector from the motherboard then clearing the CMOS? the capacitors hold a charge for a long time. could also be a bad bios flash from a bad floppy disk...........

Thanks everyone for your replies. I finally got the problem resolved. After doing some keyword searches on Google, I came across this site: http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kg7kr7/boot_problems.htm

I had one of the case fans plugged into the fan4 header and once this was removed the BIOS screen came up just fine. On the above mentioned site, here is the excerpt:

This is usually caused by the CPU cooler fans crashing the BIOS. Some fans generate spikes on the rising edge of the tacho signal and this generates unusual RPM values, which the bios does not seem to like. To see if this is the cause of your problem, stop the fans from spinning by blocking them with your fingers before switching on - if the problem goes away this is the cause of your problem.

I didn't think this would be the problem, but I've had no troubles since and I haven't changed the hardware configuration.

Once again, thanks everyone!
