help a picky guy choose some headphones

I've had these Unwired 6000 IRs for about 4 years, maybe more, and i really don't need wireless headphones, that's a lot of dough i've spent on batteries (I just realised that 😛). So i'd like to get some good non-wireless headphones...hopefully which i'll notice an improvement in sound quality with. Another thing i must have is an adjustable volume switch on the left side of the headphones (that's where the picky part comes in). It's kind of hard to find that sort of information out before buying them, but perhaps some people know from personal experience. I listen to a LOT of mp3s, and play a LOT of games. Something in the $40-$80 price range sounds good. Anyone got some reccomendations?

If you could part with the volume control, get an SR-80 from Grado. These have great bass, work on anything from small players to anything way up, and have, hands-down, the best sound of headphones below $100 out there. I'm personally thinking of getting the SR-125 model, which has slightly better sound.

Cans or buds?

The best buds are probably the sony E-888s (though people would argue but three are arguments over sound this is just my opinion)

Cans..hmmm well I have heard good things about Senheisser headphones but I am a bud man myself so I have no first hand experience.

Thanks for the replies. Everyone seems to love the Grado headphones...so they must be good, they look so old school though, heh...made of foam right? Can't argue much i guess. I suppose I could do without the volume control on the left phone thingy, but i'd really like to have that since i'm so used to it now.

I could do either cans or buds.

I just use my keyboards volume control for my Grado RS-80s? But a word to the wise yes the sound great but they take some getting used to they really hurt my ears @ first. I then made some modded ear pads and now love them. Owned a pair of Seinheiser 280pros and love the grados bass but miss the 280s closed design and better comfort level. But then again My dog took care of my poor chewed 280s 🙁

just got my Sony 7506 Studio cans.

They go for ~$99 and sound great. Used in lots of studio/radio applications(howard stern show for one).

Have excellent bass and can kick the highs out if the recording has it. I've heard stuff that I always miss with other headphones and speakers (like guitar slides, chord changes, background static on bad recordings etc)

I should also mention that these are PRO gear so BestBuy, CompUSA will NOT have them, but Sam Ash, Guitar Center and other places that sell recording gear will. They will even let you demo them against other models they sell if you ask.

Zalman Surround headphones

Review

Anybody have or tried these?

The Zalman headphones are gimmicky IMO. the sound separation is not any good for movies and when games have lots of background sound you won't hear it like a 5.1 system would play it.

I found that a stereo headphone would be better for general purpose. For movies just use true 5.1

In that price range I would only consider:

Grado SR80
Grado SR60
Sennheiser HD 280 Pro
Sennheiser HD 497

YOu can buy a coard that has in line volume control

Stay away from pretty much anything else in that price range. Especially Sony's. They dont make the vr 6 anymore, only the 600 which sux.

I prefer teh sennheiser HD 280 pro. I auditioned some Grado, and didnt care for them. A but too bright for my taste, and I like the presentation on the senn's better. Plus they are powered more easily by a portable player than the grados are

I love my 280's. Talk about comfortable! I think its a good idea to audition these phones, I was all set to buy Grado but then I heard them, against the senn's and I prefered the senn's

Thanks again for the replies.

I'm about ready to get some Sennheisers ( I don't mess around 😛 ). How are the 570s? I think i could get them within my price range, though i might just go with the 497s or 280s.

Yeah i got a volume control thing on my keyboard, but it kinda sucks because if i try to turn it up or down in a game it almost always crashes, cause that stupid volume thing comes right up on screen...so it's pretty annoying.

The 570's are great headphones, but some people say geared more towards classical music. Regardless of which Sennheiser you get, they are all modular, so you can actually just buy a cord with inline volume and replace the stock one.

The other thing about the 570's is that they really need a power source like a headphone amp, to sound the best they can sound. One of the strengths of the 280 is that it sounds great without an ampm however you can use one for ecen better performance. Keep in mind that the 280s are closed headphones as well. you may or may not like this. This is a plus for me, as I like the isolation.

sorry for any typos, im not wearing my glasses 😛

Also, check out headphone.com for reviews/buyer's guide. They also make headphone amps which might be handy as well. I am thinking about upgrading from the crappy Panasonic buds to something serious with an amp.

Actually, they still make the V6s, they're called the 7506s and they are essentially the same thing, only with gold plated jacks. The 7506s are very nice headphones (unlike most other Sonys, especially under $100), and can definitely compete with any of your suggestions.
