Help a noob!

Hey guys, I have been searching online trying to figure this out, and stumbled across your site. I have what could be a complex or simple problem for you. I have a Creative Inspire p7800 audio system, and I am trying to connect it to my Vizio Model Number : Vizio E321VL, it has a R/L audio output and a optic audio out. So far the only thing I have been able to come up with is using a audio video switchi and plugging one of my three cables into the audio output, and plugging my TV audio out into the back. However I'd really like it if I could get the full surround sound out of my system. It can do it, so why wouldn't i want it to right?

What kind of convertor box or cable do I need to make this happen? Or is my only solution what I am doing right now? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It will be my television. I want to output from it to my speaker system. the sources will be different gaming systems, dvd players, ect, but all audio will be outputted from the TV to the stereo system.

won't work. you need a receiver.

all sources to receiver, receiver to tv for video, to speakers for audio.

Thats exactly what i want to do. The TV will be receiving all input, then outputting it to the speakers.

EDIT: However if using the TV's built in output is impossible to do this, what do I need to make it work? Links would be appreciated.

seems like you'll need something that supports optical in and 7.1 computer speaker output

I'm not sure if this'll work, but it probably requires a computer

what sdifox is talking about is you need a HOME THEATER receiver that supports computer speaker outputs
this is a surefire way to get it to work, but will likely be costly
the home theater receiver would receive all inputs and direct all outputs to the TV and speakers
the cheapest way to do this would be to search on craigslist electronics for "receivers" and look through them for ones with 7.1 preouts.

this might work, but it requires a computer though

I don't have a computer which I can place with my TV. However if it all it requires is a USB to power it my TV has a built in USB port. Could that work?

he has multiple sources, and TV generally do not pass through the audio signal to the spdif. Even if they do, his speaker set does not have spdif input.

My brother's TV has a line out and is outputting everything connected to it to his stereo system. I want to do the same thing, however my speaker system is designed for a computer.

his tv is passing through DTS and DD? interesting, you still need to convert the spdif to 5.1

something like this, again example, not advocating for this particular one

Assuming your TV will pass through DD and DTS through the optical out that is.

"If your sound system has a S/PDIF (optical) digital audio input you can connect it from your sound system to the OPTICAL digital audio out on your HDTV. This is active when receiving audio with the programs being viewed no matter what input is being used. "

looks like it will work
and yes, you'd connect the TV's optical out to one of the Audio Converter's OPT inputs, and the p7800 to something like the FR SR CEN and SW

Alright guys, thanks. I ordered me what i need to get everything working. I'll be back here with any other problems i may have. ^^

Alright, so in order to do this I'd need a optic cable and then hook up all my stereo equipment into the back of it?

all game systems to tv with hdmi

optical cable from tv to the converter box I linked

rca cables from that box to your audio system

buy cables from monoprice.
