Help a noob who spilt AS5 on Cpu Pins!

Hi, new member and noob here
I was trying to reinstall the CPU and HSF since my e6600 was getting 40C idle with Scythe Mine Cooler. I was cleaning up the HSF and the CPU. AFter all that, I go and install the CPU but before, i align the triangle and just looked at the bottom. DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!! I see some residue of AS5 on it. It;s not very much but I can see about tiny 1.5 cm line there. What can I do? How should I go about cleaning up the mess on a surface that is prolly the most sensitive one ever?
Even after I clean up, is there a chance that it might not function as before or worst scenario, damage and kill my mobo as well??????
I hate myself!!!!!!!!!!!

Use some thermal material remover(rubbing alcohol should work) using a coffee filter to clean it up. You definitely don't wanna short out the pins.

Calm down. You ain't gonna hurt anything.

Take a Q-Tip, dab the tip in alcohol (90%+) and watch it eat the AS5 away. Let it dry. Reinstall your CPU.

Clean as much as the AS5 on the heat spreader and the edges, then submerge and shake the whole CPU in 99% isopropyl alcohol until all of the AS5 is dissolved.

I have spilled isopropyl alcohol on my E6300 gold contacts and the motherboard pins, and have no problems with them once they got dried up.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I was thinking of getting the ArctiClean thing to clean but now that i know, i'll try the isopropyl alcolhol stuff with Q-Tips.

Won't the alcohol get inside the CPU thru the gold contacts tho?

Man I'm so noobish that i'm afraid to do anythng right now. Shoulda just ordered
from Dell? Although I saved 1500 buck or so, it's very stressful for a nub like me heh
Anyways, i'll take your advice with grateful heart and try that later on.
Thanks
Any more advices will be very very much appreciated.

The first time is always the scariest. 😉

Everybody makes mistakes, I've killed a few PSUs, video cards and HDDs myself over the years, and I'm not even a n00b, just careless sometimes. 😛

Ha! Very comforting news there ... 😉

OP you'll be fine using the alcohol, it won't kill anything.

THanks guys, i'm gonna cry now
Wipe my tears off, go to Duane Reade or something and buy alcohol

Btw, my e6600 idling at 40C is fine tho? I checked other forums, they get like 30 idle...

Hahaha, one thing I've learnt over the years - static is bad.... mmmk?

luckily, AS5 is non-conductive. provided you clean it up reasonably well, you shouldn't have to worry about shorting anything out.

frigging friend comes over and insists that he aids me cleaning it up.
He sets it up on a table that's about slightly lower than knee-high(im about 5'11"). He dabbs Q-Tip and I gently clean up the gold contacts. All done, relieved but my friend, not a friend any more!, dropps it! Fortunately, CPU had the black cover thing that protects the gold contacts area but man I was so mad!
How does this sound to you guys? My friend says it is ok lol and shortly followed by my series of profanity words. I feel sory for him cuz he didn't do it on purpose but come on!
My MB arrives on Wed so I have till then to worry about it now. So much for trying to save 1000 bucks from buying Dell......

Unless the contacts touched the carpet, or you drug the cpu around long enough on it's top to create static, it's fine. BTW, you saved well over $1,000 by not buying through Dell (along with at least 8 weeks time), so even if you fry this chip, you'll still be able to buy two more to replace it, before it starts costing you money. Of course, you'll have more performance either way, since you can't overclock a Dell, and they put such cheap parts into their computers.😉

Your MB arrives on wednesday?

So what were you trying to install the e6600 into?

😕

As long as you let whatever you dunk it in dry properly, you'll be fine.

I had it put on another system. That frigging friend(roomie) made a deal with me and use my conroe until all my parts arrive and I can use his computer with my conroe in whenever I want.

Anyways, it wasn't carpet. It was sorta kitchen floor. And contacts touched nothing but the black plastic cover that they had. I shouldn't worry right?

Man you really are a n00b....
Wow, anyway yeah man, calm down!
You are really stressing crap you shouldnt worry about, comon bring up some bravery!
Yeah thats definatly not gonna do jack! Ive dropped tons of CPUs on the ground and they work perfect, even conroes!
Yeah so calm down man!

Isopropyl alcohol evaporates completely over a short period of time and leaves no residue behind. Basically you can clean almost anything with it. Is the cpu installed with as5 on the pins? Or is as5 on the pins and its not installed in the mobo?
Edit: nvm i see that youve got it cleaned

@OP:
Calm down. Seriously, calm down. Breathe. Relax.
Clean with a coffee filter or Q-Tip dipped in isopropyl rubbing alcohol. The alcohol will simply dry away 5 minutes after you've cleaned away all the AS5.

If your CPU is idling ~10-Celsius higher than it should be, check to make sure the voltage is set to "Auto" in your motherboard, and make sure that you don't put on a thick layer of thermal paste. All you need is a thin coat to fill the microscopic gaps between heat spreader and heatsink. My method is to scrape away as much thermal paste as possible using a credit card (which I clean beforehand, along with the heatspreader and heatsink, with isopropyl rubbing alcohol) until I cannot see the heatspreader, but I can't scrape any more off either without *really* pushing down on it.

Let me ask this.
Was it daylight or night under incandescent light when you cleaned the chip w/ alcohol?
Because incandescent light and alcohol cerate a massive electrostatic charge that kills the CPU. I hope you cleaned it in daylight, right?

🙂

Don't listen to OChungry. In the past cleaning cpu's I littlerally have dropped them into the alochol, pulled them out, q-tipped them, let them dry and then they ran.

But OcHungry will probably say they were AMD chips so they are made of better silicone, and thats why they are not as fast as C2D.

because?
Don?t tell me you went and experimented w/ a light bulb?
Oh I forgot to mention the light bulb under 40 watts is safe. Next time experiment w/ a 60watt bulb and report back
🙂
