I've never installed a new processor before but i think im ready to try. Here is what i know to do anyone else please fill in anything im missing. I have a 1g athlon socet a. im upgrading to a xp 1900 socket a. this processor has a zif(zero insterion force) socket. after removing the heatsink there should be a little latch on the processor to let me pull the processor right out. the new processor will only go in one way because it is keyed(right?) apply thermal compound to the center of the processor ( the raised surface on the chip) reinstall the heatsink, anything i need to be especially careful of here, i don't want to mess this processor up. thanks for any help. and yes my motherboard will accept the xp( ive checked) and i will need to flash the bios in order for the proccessor to be recogonized as an xp. any recomandation on flashing the bios, before the processor install or after. thanks again.

Flash before the installation....CPU has two cut corners so it will only go in one way...Be careful not to bend the pins

<< after removing the heatsink there should be a little latch on the processor to let me pull the processor right out. >>

the "latch" is a lever that is attached to the socket, not the processor, and it needs to be lifted in order to remove the old processor.

<< reinstall the heatsink, anything i need to be especially careful of here >>

Have two flathead screwdrivers handy, one big and one small to assist in reattaching the heatsink. I often use the big one to gently push the clip down while the little one pulls the clip outward so that it can attach to the nub on the socket. Do it carefully and gently and you should be okay. BTW, are you sure that your old heatsink is sufficient to cool the new processor, or did you get a new heatsink as well?

I am planning on building my first computer soon. How is it possible to flash the bios without installing the CPU? Doesn't the mobo need this to function?

Doh!!! I think he means flash the BIOS while the old processor is still in place. It shouldn't be incompatable with the existing processor, but after flashed, will allow the new one to work. Right? ;)
