What do I need to get in order to share my DSL line (SBC Yahoo) between two PCs?

Thanks very much for the help!

I just got off Yahoo!SBC/DSL service, it was a very reliable service.
Youll need a Cable/DSL router, one with 4 ports (you can have up to 4 PC's connected to the net)

The popular ones are Linksys and Netgear and SMC..probably a few others I missed, but Ive always used Linksys.

They are pretty cheap..think Outpost.com had them for $40.
In the router setup pages (the instructions will show you how), youll enter your DSL ID and PW, this willconnect the router to the net, through the DSL modem...then all you have to do is plug your PC's into the back of the router with Ethernet cables..

Youll need a cable from the DSL modem to the router and then from the router to each PC.

You can probably find a good deal on a used Linksys router in the for sale area here...good luck!

You need a router. you might want to look in the networking forum for more info. They are cheap, a non wireless one can be had for as low as 50 bucks.

You don't need a router. A router is much better though. I ran my wife's pc thru my computer for a couple years before we wized up.
You can run DSL on a computer thru a pppoe program such as Raspppoe and then network your other PC thru the first one. The downside is that the first pc must be on and connected to the internet for the other pc to be connected.

By the way, if I were you, I would uninstall Winpoet or whatever program SBC gave you and just install Raspppoe. It's VERY small and unobtrusive, extremely simple to set up, and never crashes or disconnects like Winpoet. Winpoet sucks 🙁

Edit yet again- Windows XP has it's own pppoe software and will connect a single PC to the internet with no 3rd party software or drivers at all. I've never tried to network thru the single pc though, so I don't know if you can do it or not.

Thanks for the input folks.

Can't wait to do some Counter-Strike scoutin'....muahahahahaa!!!!

2 options

elcheapo non upgradable method (not recomended):
get an extra NIC in your main PC, use it to connect to the net (it will be your "gateway")
then using a "crossover" ehternet cable link the gateway to the 2nd computer
then you setup internet connection sharing on the gateway.

prefered method, get a (router, switch, or hub)router is best, and connect your DSL modem to the router and the 2 pc's to the router (use "patch" ethernet cable (sometimes called straight) to make all 3 connections).
router is most effiecent, it will usually allow 4 users(one will be uplink->goes to modem)
switch and hubs are cheaper, but less effecent/ slower.

you should be able to get a router for less than $50. links sys bsr41 is great! (i think thats the model #)

in the future you should post this type of question in the networking forum!, also do some searches there and you'll find lots of good info

All I needed to share my DSL was XP's ICS wizard and a regular Cat5 network cable between the PC's. You'll need 2 NIC's in the host machine (my ASUS has 2 onboard, so np for me) and 1 NIC in the rig you want to share the connection (cheapy Linksys PCI works fine here). Run the wizard and you're sharing DSL. Host machine has to be up and running, but its simple and works great IMHO.

You need to use a crossover Cat 5 cable to communicate between 2 PCs. They look the same as, but are wired different then, a straight through Cat 5 cable.
