I'll be building a new PC soon enough, for around $1500..

I've been out of the loop for a long time.... I think im gonna go with an intel core 2 duo...

What's the best processor for the money?

What about motherboards? Poking around, i saw about 100 different freakin chipsets for the 775 socket type for intels.... WTF? What's what, and what's best?

Whatever you can tell me to help out would rock!

Check out THIS thread, I thought he had a pretty good setup goin for ~$1500. Of course, it not all gonna work for you.

Definitely go core 2 duo. Price cuts are coming ~22nd, so expect to save some money from what prices you see right now.

Are you coming from an older PC? Are you going to salvage any parts, such as keyboard, or monitor?

What resolution do you want to be at? And is this for gaming, work, or what? Will you be overclocking?

And reviews and benches of AMD's R600 should be coming out soon, if I were you, I would wait for them and compare to Nvidia's cards.

Please answer all the questions ^.

Thanks for the reply!

I'll be salvaging my 22" widescreen westinghouse LCD, and my keyboard/mouse combo, but I fee that that's about it as far as I wish to salvage.

I'm coming from an AMD Opteron 144 w/ a 6800GT card and 1gb of ram. I wanna reformat this PC for my son, and let him and my wife use it.

I plan on doing some gaming, some CAD work using Autocad2007 and SolidWorks 2007, and I'll also be doing heavy photoshop/illustrator work, and possibly some video/sound editing 🙂

So it's pretty much a do-all PC for me. Main thing I'm confused on is the motherboard and all the various chipsets available for intel processors. Way too many!
