Sorry if this is an obvious answer, spent some time reading through the basic stuff, but still struggling to find an answer.

Just bought a new system and about to build it, only component I'm using from my old setup is my power supply...

Got an OC Geforce GTX 896mb video card which recommends a 500w power supply with a 12v current rating of 36a... My power supply is 500w with a 12v1 current rating of 16a (that is what I read on the side of the ps)

Is this going to be a large problem? Weary of using this for my new system, but alas I'm broke and can't really afford a new one. (I won't be overclocking)

Thanks for the help!

what specific power supply is it?

16A certainly isn't enough...but since you said 12V1 I would assume that is not the only 12V source.

Not at home atm, but will be soon. It's been so long I honestly don't even remember, but I can find out.

Even if there are multiple sources, I'm assuming it still may be a danger?

Welcome to the forums!

1) We need to know what your videocard is. Gtx 896mb isn't its real name.

2) We need to know your power supply make and model, and its ratings. Look for 12V1, 12V2, 12V3, etc, and look to see if in addition it tells you its combined 12V power.

MSI N260GTX-T2D896 OC GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16

Really bad with PSU knowledge, something I've never bothered learning about... The stickies in this forum were amazing, but still a bit confused :p

COOLER MASTER eXtreme RP-500-PCAR 500W ATX12V V2.01

Believe it has 2 12v rails, both at 16amps. Not sure if I'm wording that right. And having trouble finding the combined power, did some searching through various lists of PSU's combined powers and on everyone the result was NG (Not Given).

Thanks for the help so far.

The Extreme line of PSUs aren't known for being quality or even decent PSUs. I'd get a replacement PSU ASAP. What are the specs of the rest of your system?

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Gigabyte EP45-UD3R Motherboard
MSI Geforce GTX 260 896mb
4gb G.skill DDR2 800 ram
WD Caviar Green HD 500mb sata

Thanks for the reply dang, after all I have read today I am leaning towards a new Power Supply, I think...

Yeah with that kind of system, I would not trust the Coolermaster PSU. Definitely replace that PSU. The BFG LS-550 or the Corsair 650TX at $80 and $100 respectively from newegg are good choices.
