Sorry, in a hurry!

One machine has XP PRo, the other 98SE

they share a DSL connect thru an AOpen AOW-605 switch with no problem.

I cannot get them to share files/folders, etc.!
I have tried manually setting them up, using a network setup disk from XP PRo, even dumping all items used to create a connection, (TCP/IP) etc. and starting fresh.
I have created users on both machines that match, with no passswords...
I cannot think of anything else off the top of my head.

Is there any difference in setting them up with a switch instead of a router? I have done it twice with a router with no problems.

Thanx!!
Ron
gotta blast.....

Because Router build in DCHP but not switch. When XP not see the network or the DHCP server then it will auto assign this range of ip address 169.254.X.X
Make sure they are in the same workgroup and on the same subnet of ip.

To make sure your PCs are using the same ip address range do the following:

Type ipconfig at the command prompt on XP
Type winipcfg at the command prompt on win98

The better way to do is setup static ip on both PCs when no DHCP.

Make sure that NETBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled in TCP/IP advanced properties.

If you still can't see them, install the NETBEUI protocol on both machines.
