a little after I logon, the comp locks up :(

Is there anything I'm doing wrong or is there a problem with this mobo?

does it do the same thing in safe mode?

did you swap from another card to this one?

I've been in safe mode and it does not seem to do this, also, I've installed XP clean and still same effect :(

then it sounds like you have a driver problem...what order are you installing the drivers? after the clean install, can you get to the desktop without installing the video drivers?

yes, I can stay in the desktop as long as I want if no drivers are installed...however as soon as I install the drivers, it locks up. Thing is, I try the reference drivers, catalyst 4.1 and the previous version of catalyst...all lockups :| :(

been googling and there doesn't seem to be any major issues with 9600xt and older mobos

Try disabling fastwrites, also leave PCI slot one empty(nearest to AGP slot) and check in System Info that the video card is not sharing IRQ with your sound card(SBLive for example).

I have an ASUS P3V4X, but it is in a cardboard box, having been replaced with a newer ABIT ST6/Tualy combo in my 2nd PC. I'm wondering if it is a voltage problem. Are you sure that mobo has the required power for that video card? Oldfart would probably know but I have noticed him around lately.

Make sure its under 4x and 128mb aperture. After all it is a 128 mb card. Its either a voltage problem, compatibility issue or a card. Since you said all the drivers arent working it might also be a psu issue. What watt psu?

Try using the Catalyst 3.7s. I have the same problem on my comp with newer drivers and it's starting to bug me.

P3V4X is an old mobo. Slot cpu's I believe right? Anyway, agp 4x was brand new back then and if I had to guess, I'd just say the mobo is too old. If you can afford to spend 250$ on a new mobo/cpu/ram, you won't regret it.

Does the graphics card require external power? I doubt the AGP slot could provide enough..

ok, here's more info about my comp, sorry for the short answer earlier, had to run :)

My Comp is running 256MB AGP Aperture, however, I have bumped it down to 64, with no AGP fast writes, 4x, and still no go :(

The PCI slot nearest to the agp port is also open, I will check on the IRQ sharing later, but I'm sure it's not being shared.

I also find it strange that this card does not have a power header...even my old Voodoo 5 5500 AGP had a power header, so I guess the card is drawing power straight from mobo/PSU? If that's the case, is my 330W psu enough?

Here's a full load of the devices in my system:

Enermax 330W PSU, 2 Fans
P3V4X
PIII 650 on IWIll Slot + 1 CPU Fan
896MB of RAM (512, 128, 128, 128)
Adaptec 29160
Seagate x15.3 + GlobalWIN HDD Cooler
Intel Pro 100+ Dual Port Server Nic
ATI TV Wonder Pro w/remote
SB Live Platinum w/Live drive I
Adaptec 2940UW
80mm Case fan
Toshiba 16X DVD Rom
WD 120GB JB HDD
IBM 15GB HDD

That's it :p

I know it's a lot of devices but, I'm running it solid now with my V5, so I know it's the vid card...maybe PSU. I will try to unload some devices tonight when I get home, but I do believe when I 1st installed xp, I disconnect power to the 2 IDE drives, so that should save some power. I don't know what else I can remove...maybe my low end SCSI card? If so, no cd burning :(

Any help will be much appreciated! maybe it's a silly mobo setting, otho, I have reset the bios to factory default and still it does not work :(

Maybe this card just isn't supported by my mobo...which really pisses me off, because it says it's AGP 4X compatible. Also, do you guys think it might be the 4in1 drivers?

Also, I've installed the same vid card in another P4 system and it's rock solid :| Thing is, I don't want it in that P4, I want it in my PIII :(

The only thing I can think of is bump up the AGP voltage to 1.6v or 1.7v(that`s if the BIOS has that setting).

You can try all the options here .

It`s possible it could be an incompatibility problem with your old P3V4X board.

I'm 99% sure that card is drawing more power than your antiquated AGP slot can handle...
