I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 ver 2 4 port router with wireless 802.11b
3 computers on the router. Two are wired and one is wireless
The wireless one is using a Linksys wireless USB adapter.
The signal strength varies between Excellent and Very Good
I have encryption enabled.
Running router firmware version 1.43 Sept 5, 2002.
However the network/internet connection on the wireless computer is almost unusable.
All of my backups now fail. I cannot copy a 200mb file from one the wireless computer to another on the network without some sort of failure - perhaps a timeout. I keep getting message like the drive doesn't exist or is not connected part way thru the download. :frown:
I also play online internet gaming and the "lag" factor (i.e. how often the game hesitates while waiting for data) is incredible. The game has an option in which I can see what the average ping times are as well as packet loss. I'm seeing packetloss numbers averaging from 6%-22% and ping times that sometimes exceed 7 seconds.
I have no idea how to debug this problem. It could be interference but how would I figure out what? The wireless connected computer (running XP HOME) has a wireless keyboard and mouse (logitech).
In the house I have a cordless phone and 2 wireless light switches. All computers are on the same floor in the house. Direct line of sight between router and wireless computer does require going thru a concrete block wall. Total distance about 30 feet.
I can see that linksys has firmware version 1.45 out there but didn't see anything in the release notes for that version which seemed relevant.
Any ideas would be extremely helpful. I use a cable modem connection and there's no possible way I can run another wire from my current cable modem to that room where the wireless computer is. However, just outside the window in the room where the wireless computer is is where the cable wiring comes into the house. If there was a way to split that cable at that point I could run it thru the wall into that room. However I don't have a cable modem in there and am not sure if i can add one without paying Roadrunner for 2 accounts. Does anyone know?
Or alternatively, there is a cable tv cable in that room. Could I use that for my internet? I'd need a cable modem of course so the same question above applies.
I guess what it comes down to is that I just don't trust the wireless connection and would prefer to be wired but can't figure out how to do that if I can't run a wire from my current router to this computer.
