Help! 63 degrees with Alpha PAL6035

I have an AMD 1 ghz (axia) chip. I am not overclocking it. I have a Alpha PAL6035 with what I think is the stock fan. With the case on my temps are running around 63 degrees celcius. I just bought a Taisol CGK760092. With the stock fan on that one, I get around 52 degrees. Can anyone tell me why the Alpha is performing so poorly? One thing I noticed, is that the clip does not go on the same way as the instructions state. It isn't possible to put the clip on in the direction that the instructions say to because the fins on the heatsink don't go that way. I am not using any thermal paste. I know there are things I can do to make it cooler, but I figured that 63 degrees was just way too high to start with.

You have to use thermal paste with an Alpha because there is no thermal pad attached!!!! You will fry the processor using it without thermal paste.. try Arctic Silver 2 or something like that.. OMG.. do not use it until you put some thermal paste on the CPU..

AS2 would be the most desirible compound, but in the meantime, put thermal paste of any kind on the die if your going to run it till you can get the AS2

Make sure the heatsink "pressure" point sits over where hte CPu core will set when mounted.. if not, the heatsink will sit unevenly on the CPu.

"It isn't possible to put the clip on in the direction that the instructions say to because the fins on the heatsink don't go that way"

that means you have the heatsink facing the wrong direction. I had the same problem not being able to attach the clip because the fins went the other way. turns out that the heatsink was facing the wrong way.

The Alpha PAL6035 does not have fins, it has pins which are round. If you look at the bottom of the heatsink, you'll see that one side has a relief machined in it to clear the raised (hinge) side of the socket. One end of the holddown clamp must be at that end of the heatsink so that it will have something to clip to when the heatsink is correctly oriented on the socket.
