Just recently, I noticed that whenever, I log out, it takes forever (3+ minutes) to logoff. Even just trying to log of my user and log on another (Windows XP Pro).

I looked in the event log and noticed several messages under Applications...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1524
Date: 10/10/2002
Time: 1:31:06 PM
User: SHPANKEY\Chad
Computer: SHPANKEY
Description:
Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and this is the other one...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 10/10/2002
Time: 1:31:06 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: SHPANKEY
Description:
Windows saved user SHPANKEY\Chad registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I used to see those events all the time.

I was running XP which was installed as an upgrade over 98se. I never really felt I completely understood them, but it seemed like ZoneAlarm was involved.

Recently I did a clean install and those events are now gone. ????

I didn't have the long shutdown problem when they were occuring. (makes me assume it is something else ...)

It sounds to me like it is something to do with your Internet (or local network). I know If I was screwing around with one of the comps. on my home network, sometimes the other comp. would have a VERY slow shutdown if I had been using file or printer sharing. I didn't really consider it a "problem" as in something broken, but it was annoying. If you use a router it may be in the equation.

You aren't going to want to hear this, but after the re-installs, I don't see this anymore either. My only explanation has been that I had so much Windows98se clutter when I upgraded to XP, (not to mention all the experiments that went south.......) even XP couldn't clean it all up.

Good Luck! (Please post if you solve it...... I'm sure you aren't the only one with this going on)

I can't find anything on this issue. I just installed this OS less than a week ago. Argh! Thanks for the help though. Anyone else?

This might help solve your problem. It will look for what is holding up your computer and give you a report.

Here the Fastboot Text Document (It's an exe for somereason, but it works) It explains many things that the program can do.

And the actual BootVis program

Thanks guys. I figured this out now. First of all, here is a killer resource I cam across (bookmark this NOW!)...

http://www.eventid.net/

It is awesome!

Here are other users that had the same prob, note that none of them figured out how to fix this...

Basically, what this error comes from is from changing your Services. I had "tweaked" them and apparently upset something that needed to be running. Luckily, I remembered which Services I changed and just set them back. Now all is well.

that is a cool resource! (bookmarked)

Come to think of it......... way back, I used some site to "tweak" my services on the old setup. I'll bet I had hoz0red mine up too. On the clean installs, I hadn't had time to "fix" anything yet ( LOL ). Guess that might explain why I have no difficulties now.

Moral: Time for me to follow my own advise and quit experimenting so much unless I have a clue!
