Never heard of Marmot, but I know HH is pretty damn upscale. When they can charge 2x the amount as their competition for the same quality stuff and still make money, they're probably considered to be the "best".

There's a Helly Hansen store here on W 4th Ave in Vancouver where you can't find anything for under $100 unless you're talking t-shirts and socks (and even the socks are at least $20 a pair, and the t-shirts are $55).

From my experience seeing products from both companies at REI, it seems Marmot is slightly higher quality. Are you buying a parka?
If you want really cold weather stuff, I'd look in to The North Face gear. I have a TNF sleeping bag that's lasted me 8 years and has been through EVERYTHING.
Columbia sportswear products are also very good, as are REI's in-house gear.

Marmot, TNF, Mountain Hardware, HH, etc....all have high end mountaineering equipment. TNF usually has the most sales though, (and strangely enough the most knock-offs, outlets (genuine but no warranty)) so you can often get 350+ gore-tex parkas for about half. I was in that whole hiking/outdoors thing back in high school and bought enough gear to ascent Everest, but mainly stuck to summer hiking in my running shoes. I still have these funky synthetic shirts that stunk when you sweated in them...but it kept you warm even when wet.

Marmot makes some really good gear, better than Helly Hansen, IMO, and better than TNF, moutain hardware, etc....
