hey guys, im in a pretty big dilemma, my laptop's hard drive is dying (i think....it makes these weird clicking noises once in a while and sometimes things take FOREVER to load while the hard drive activity light stays lit up). Well i have a lot of info i want to save from the laptop and i was wondering what my options are. I bought a new laptop hard drive from newegg so i wanted to start over with a new copy of windows. The laptop doesnt have a cdrw/dvdrw drive so i cant really burn my stuff to discs. Any ideas? Also how would i go about on installing windows onto the new blank hard drive for the laptop...does a laptop even have a bios to tell what to boot up from? well thanks in advance.
 
the only thing i can think of is an external hard drive- thatll take forever unless youve got firewire or usb 2.0, but its all i can think of.


edit: ok, wasnt thinking. assuming it's got an ethernet port, network it with another computer and transfer your stuff that way. hopefully youve got access to another computer. 😛
 
yeah i have a desktop available....but how would i go about in networking it? do i need a router? can i just connect it to my computer directly with an ethernet cable? could u tell me in detail? im a newbie -_-
 
before you buy the stuff to link it through a router, and etc.

Have you defragged your hard disk?

Have u checked ur comp for spyware and viruses?

Is your hard drive completely full? I believe it is recommended that a hard disk have around 25% free space. (correct me guys if im wrong)



To install windows, you will probably need the restore cd that came with the laptop to install the original os. Then get an windows xp upgrade cd if your computer didnt come with windows xp if you are using it currently

It seems to me that since your computer doesnt have a cdrw/dvd drive, Im assuming its dated.
 
you should be able to buy a cross-over network cable and hook up the laptop directly to another computer. you will need to assign both computers an ip address in the same subnet for them to see each other.
 
well, to be honest, im kind of a newb to networking too. im almost positive you can just connect em directly, though.
 
you can't quite connect them directly. you either need to connect each computer to a switch/hub/router, or you need to use a cross-over cable.
 
Since your going to need to remove the hard drive anyways get yourself a cheap external usb 2.0 hard drive enclosure. That would be the easiest if your not comfortable with a cross over cable.
 
you have 3 ways out...

1) To get a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter. This will let you connect your laptop hdd to ur desktop.... This is the FASTEST way of data transfer...
2) To get a external USB 2.0 Enclosure for your laptop HDD
3) You network both the machine... all you need is a CAT 5 cable (straight) and network card on both machines.

As for starting with your new HDD, just put the new hdd where your old hdd was. Go into the BIOS (How depends on the laptop make/model) and put the first bootup device as the CD ROM. Pop in your op. system cd rom and install....

You can connect them directly...

You need a CAT 5 ethernet cable (Straight)....
 
I guess you can directly network the computers togeather using the serial/parallel ports. Not sure if the USBs will work but you could try. Also if you were running XP on either system then you could probably tranfer files directly. XP has that inbuilt functionality.
But I kinda like the suggestion by LtPage1. Get an external HDD connector from ebay or whatever. I found some connectors on ebay which did not have the enclosure, just the connectors for the desktop and laptop size HDD/DVD drives with the power cable and data bus included.

Can you really use an IPOD's HD as an external hard disk? That is very strange! But a great suggestion if it works. 🙂
