Hello Vietnam....

Just a bunch of alarmist.

The Nebraska Republican added that a draft, which was ended in the early 1970s, would spread the burden of military service in Iraq more equitably among various social strata.

And how is this going to change anything? It won't, the upper middleclass will get out of the draft because they would be going to college. If they want to increase the military size, increase the salary. Then at least you would have people WANTING to fight for their country, rather than forced to.

But this is only one senator, and it'll never pass.
 
It's never going to happen. The Defense Dept. and Pentagon have both stated there is no need for a draft and have vigorously opposed any call for one.
 
Notwithstanding recent stories in the news media and on the Internet, Selective Service is not getting ready to conduct a draft for the U.S. Armed Forces -- either with a special skills or regular draft. Rather, the Agency remains prepared to manage a draft if and when the President and the Congress so direct. This responsibility has been ongoing since 1980 and is nothing new. Further, both the President and the Secretary of Defense have stated on more than one occasion that there is no need for a draft for the War on Terrorism or any likely contingency, such as Iraq. Additionally, the Congress has not acted on any proposed legislation to reinstate a draft. Therefore, Selective Service continues to refine its plans to be prepared as is required by law, and to register young men who are ages 18 through 25.

Funny, because the main supporters of a new draft are liberal democrats. They are desperately trying to bring back the college anti-Vietnam war protests that promptly dried up when the draft was ended in '73.

Um hmm, quick, whats the objective of the SSS? To encourage as many 18-25 year olds as possible to register in case of a draft. Any news of a possible draft means less men will register, so its in their best interest, regardless of reality, to vehemently deny it. To put it in geek terms 😀 its like believing Microsoft when they say that Linux has no future. Now, I'm not saying that it'll happen, nor am I encouraing FUD, but I think its important that people remain vigilant, not apathetic.

Actually, he is right. Up until now, all of the people calling for the draft have been democrats.

If $250,000 fine and 5 years in federal prison isn't going to convince you, I don't think a little press release is going to do much to sway your views.
