There has been a lot of confusion here in the US and abroad, and perhaps where you are too as to how we think and feel. As a Representative for the "official" POV based on our actions and those of the current President and supporters, let me enlighten you.
You need to understand some things.
First, we have never been attacked by outsiders in our recent memory, not domestically at least. Yeah, there was Pearl Harbor, but that was Hawaii, which most people at the time had some passing knowledge of. NYC? Now that is another matter. It was in our face. It scared us, made us angry, and that anger had to go somewhere since we couldn't get those who attacked us.
That left you. Oh no not you personally, but we had to have someone who was at peripherally identifiable with Bin Laden, or at least wish that to be true. Saddam was our boy. Our current Leader wanted to get him years ago, and this was a chance to get many birds with one stone. That fact that you are the ones who got stoned is really not relevant to us, since it could have been most any country. You just had the bad fortune of having a bad leader. It was also a plus that you look like Bin Ladens guys.
You gave us the opportunity to get even. Thank you.
Second, and related to our fear is the fact that Saddam should have had some very nasty weapons and he should have been plotting with Bin Laden or those like him to attack us. Although powerless to do anything about it, there may have been terrorist camps in the Kurdish regions. Now the Kurds are our allies among you people, so they can't be blamed. If we did that it would weaken our reasons for attacking you. Since we needed to get Saddam, we don't really want to go there. The world is an unfair place as you know, so it really doesn't matter does it? We had to get those weapons that should have been there and that was the single most important element in deciding to invade. It was imperative that we got them.
Now it seems that those weapons aren't around anywhere. Did you happen to see them?
You may have been wondering that if they were so important, and they weren't there, why didn't that matter? Well, go back to my first point. We were attacked, which made us fearful, which made us angry, which made us have to lash out and that meant Saddam. That you were between us and him was your own fault.
While it is true we went after Clinton with a vengeance, he did something most of us would never be caught doing. Doesn't mean we don't, but we don't get caught at it, and then lie to Congress over it. We were morally superior to him, and therefore were glad to take him on. You however present a bit of a quandary. Since we were so easily led by the Administration into this war, if we condemn him, then we do ourselves. Consequently don't ask for an investigation. If you do, we will use a time honored tradition. Blame everyone else but ourselves. The faults are not in ourselves or the stars, but the CIA. Nevermind that the CIA did precisely what we wanted, which was to provide some shred of justification for the war. We have to blame someone besides ourselves, and that means them.
Now Americans being morally and intellectually superior to you have an obligation. It used to be called the "White Man's Burden" but we are really a melting pot, and lots of minority folks here felt the same way after 9/11, so we can't call it that. Instead we named it "Operation Iraqi Freedom". Sounds good, and might as well since we planned to be in the neighborhood anyway.
The principle is this. We know exactly how you need to live. Being superior to you we don't have to ask what you want to be like. You want to be like us. Your societal structure, religion, and culture are poorly understood at best by the average American, so we have to do away with those complicated issues. We like simple. We say, you do.
You are ignorant, and I don't mean to insult you, but you are. Therefore you will have a Democracy. You want one, and you will have it. If necessary, we will have armed men politely ask you if you do. You have enough sense to tell men with guns just what they want to hear, so that should take care of that. We even asked a bunch of people who lived in your country 20 or so years ago about it, and after they figured out what we were about agreed to say what we wanted to as well. We paid a lot of money to these people over the years. We even have your current CIA associated leader on our side. It was long past due to get a return on our investment.
Being a moral and correct thinking people, that believe in Democracy and Freedom, and self determination, you need to do as we say for your own good. If you did just what we told you, there wouldn't be this pesky insurgency problem. You shouldn't oppose us, because that would make you terrorists, and you see what we do to them. All this ruckus has cost us lives. More than a thousand soldiers. You may wonder about your people who have lost their lives. Well wonder no more. To be blunt, your lives are unimportant. We don't bother to keep statistics on those. They would be against your best interests anyway, and worse, make us look bad. Face it, in the New Millennia, we needed a New Morality. We used to have quaint and limiting notions. We believed that if someone was doing evil we should avoid doing the same. Now that has changed in this day of Enlightenment. As long as we kill less than Saddam, we are good. That certainly took the load off our shoulders, let me tell you!
It works like this. We don't care if we kill you. We can just ignore that by reminding ourselves of how bad Saddam was, and how we are no where near that mark yet. That makes us Better, and believe us, we are Better than you, at least until you conform.
Ah, well I have some covert ops I need to review, but in summary.
1) You will be free.
2) You will have a Democracy
3) You will be just like us
4) You will thank us later, because
5) We believe in free will, freedom and we are giving you no options.
Thanks! Without you, life for us would be so less rewarding.
