Hello SETI Team

iwajabitw

Senior member
I have recently joined your team hear at Anandtech. Have been a seti member since 99 or 2000, and just started back crunching. I have in the past crunched for Hardware Central, Overclockers.net, Xibase and others over time. In 2004 I switched to all, Linux, then Macs and stopped participating.

Now I have in the last year come back to the Windows platform. Mostly do to work and my kids school having laptops with win 7. But I found out that I really enjoyed win 7 & now 8.1, even dumped iPhone for a Lumia 1520.

So last night out of no where I thought about seti and went and recovered my old account, only 8400 Wu, but its something. Then started looking for teams and glad to see you guys still going, so I joined. First time using the Boinc software, so any tips on optimizing would be great, there site is down today.

Currently have, crunching,

IBook G4

HP win XP laptop

Vista business with athlon fx2600, nvidia 6000 series graphics

i3 home server, 5gigs ram, headless

A8 HP laptop, 8gb ram, work laptop- new this spring.

Tonight I hope to have another vista, and maybe 2-4xp systems going by the end of the week. Old office machines.

I would really like to know your ideas on the best way to set up the old units. Is command-line setup still available? Seti que, seti driver? Once I get them reformatted I will run them headless and remote in. I know how to strip XP down to bare services running, but know little about vista.

Thanks for your time

Definitely get Lunitics optimized Seti apps. They do run faster. Install the Boinc software, then install Lunitics over it. There is a windows installer that works well.

Welcome to the TeAm and the forum 🙂

I think there is still a command line client, but the GUI client works well. No Seti que or anything like that, just set the BOINC work buffer to a few days. You can only get 100 WUs for each CPU or GPU per computer.

We are currently having a bit of fun participating in the Wow!-event. You can sign up here if you want:

And check out the weekly stats thread new on Sunday afternoon.

Thanks, got them installed on each unit...now I'm in the attic looking for some PC-3200 I've got stashed away for these XP units, lol.

So far 9 systems running, 5 and 4 laptops..at least 3 more desktops in the next few days. Thus Boinc client runs well. The crunching units are so much faster than I expected. 2000 completed in about 36hrs, WOW, compared to the old days.

Nice! Exciting when you first start up again 🙂

Until you get the electric bill ... it's more expensive than it used to be.
But, what we have found is to only run the best producing computers and use the electricity money saved (1-3 months worth) to buy a good video card which will out produce many slow computers

Luckily I am removing a wine chiller and fridge from the garage, daughter off to college, son works evenings, 2 systems are at work..maybe the electric will equal out.

Welcome back to SETI & Welcome to TA 🙂.

Ah SETIQ, that brings back memories! 😉, great little program that was, particularly the latter GUI version, as was SETISpy.

Btw your SETI account, account information will tell you exactly when you started it.
My SETI birthday is Oct 16th 1999 😉.

Yeah the memories, SETISpy was the other I didn't remember, start date was March 18, 2000. Went through the account got it cleaned up and accurate.

I think he meant that the 2 systems that are running probably consume the same amount of electricity as the wine chiller and fridge he removed.

The two computers at work are old dell XP systems I kept when the upgraded to HP with win 7, last time they were turned on was 2009. I just fired them up and let them run in the corner. Gonna bring them home if they ever get to remodeling our office, it was supposed to be completed by Memorial Day.
