mobo = motherboard.

Maybe it is worth buying an OLD pc for $50, and getting used to swapping out parts.
It works out a lot cheaper to do some practice this way

Didnt get a chance to read the whole thing (I will later) but make sure you run dual monitors or LCDs, or maybe one of each.

You may want to add SCSI for the learning experience.

And yes your dad is Very Cool :)

2 LCD screens is a complete waste of money, 99% games will only run on one of the screens, or duplicate it on both screens, even if you have a split desktop across both screens it will not run properly, trust me i have tried it. Most people only run 2 screens for more real estate, so that more application windows can be opened for quick access and efficiency. i talk from experience in a previous tech support job, of running two 17" tft's which i purely needed for my work... "so bad recommendation" just had to point that out before the OP goes off on another tangent :)

jdogess: this is the Coolermaster Wavemaster i was talking about .. i have it in black but the blue looks great of course personal pref, there are different colours blue, black, yellow and silver.

After looking through the money situation .. it is probably not a good idea to purchase the FX57, i would recommend to now purchase the AMD 3700+ San Diego, this is an exceptional chip and is an FX57 but running at a lower clock 2.2Ghz as apposed to 2.8Ghz (and has a top locked multi). The performance from the AMD 3700+ is awsome you will not be disappointed, i would recommend this because it is based on the new core revision (Rev-E), and includes a lot of new features SSE3, lower latency L2 cache etc etc... and when you become confident you can get help in the Overclocking forum and possibily OC your chip to the Fx57 speeds for 25% of the FX57 cost ;)

You could wait for dual core but in your case (just gaming) it will not benefit you untill about a year or two down the line, and by that time you will be able to upgrade to the X2 and just swap out the processor and then you will be sorted. Also refer to my previous post for Cooling, you must keep quality in mind when it comes to cooling and future proof for OCing ;)

Enjoy

I'm building a cheap one to upgrade later when UT2007 comes out. :)

BTW, does anyone know what I can do if my DVD burner didn't come with a sound cable? I only have on-board sound and don't intend to buy a sound card for a while.

Anyway, the new comp I'm building:

motherboard: Asus A7V600-X
CPU: Duron 1.8 GHz
video card: GeForce4 Ti4200 (brand new, sold out on tigerdirect but still some elsewhere)
heatsink: Cables Unlimited (on tigerdirect, real name is Spire, only 21 db)
memory: Kingston 512 MB PC3200 non-ECC
case: Enermax (with fan on the side, two fans total in case with blue lights)
power supply: Enermax noisetaker 420 watt
DVD burner: NEC ND3520
hard drive: Western Digital Caviar 60 GB 7200 RPM 8 MB buffer
floppy drive: Alps Electric
round IDE cable and floppy cable: Ultra UV reactive
keyboard: Gigabyte
speakers: Altec Lansing 2 speaker
mouse: AOpen
extra case fan (not required for my system): Enermax
hard drive fan (not required for WD Caviar): Masscool

I took out the cheap PowerUp power supply from my Enermax case. Well, that's it. The screws came with the case. I even had ribbon cables from my HD/DVD and floppy with my motherboard but bought round ones to help air circulation.

I looked at the videos on the AMD website how to place a CPU/heatsink on the motherboard. I put my hands on the metal part of my case to ground myself and took the motherboard out of the static bag, placed it over the static bag in the box on the floor and placed the CPU. Then I installed the heatsink (be careful to align it correctly so the side doesn't touch the white part of the socket that is raised). I installed the memory. I then put 3 spacers inside the case since there were only 6. I popped in the in and out sheild for the motherboard in the case. I put the case on its side on the floor and rested my forearms against the metal part of the case to ground myself while I put the motherboard inside. I put 9 screws on the motherboard. Then I removed the front panel and slide the floppy drive in place. I decided to keep the face plate of the front panel for the floppy drive but I popped out the face plate for the DVD burner. I put the front panel back in place and slid the DVD burner in place. Then I installed the hard drive cooler on the hard drive with two screws because it's all that it took while still being able to slide it in from the inside of the case.

Well, now I'm waiting. My power supply, round cables, keyboard and speakers haven't arrived yet.

I've read various opinions about that. Someone posted a link on one site to the AMD web site stating that they recommend the thermal pad already on the heatsink when you buy it. Then another poster said that was old information and posted a link from the same site saying they now believe you should remove the thermal pad on high end CPUs and replace that with thermal grease. Arctic is a popular brand. Also, if you buy the retail version of the CPU, it may already come with a heatsink. But, those heatsinks can be less effective AND more noisy. Thermaltake is a popular brand name for heatsinks.

Of course, I read customer reviews on my heatsink and found out they use a different kind of thermal pad which is very good. Since it's a low end CPU, I decided to use that.
I also chose a model rated with a lower decibel rating. (Some are over 30 decibels, some are under 30.)

BTW, if you look at Abit motherboards, they have a support forum on their website. They also have a hardware compatibility for many of their boards. And, if your BIOS is not current and does not recognize a new CPU you just bought, you can order a BIOS chip for $6 US.

Popular names for motherboards: Abit, Asus, DFI, Gigabyte and MSI.
Popular names for power supplies: Enermax, Antec
I can also tell you a lot of people choose Corsair RAM. And Western Digital hard drives.

Also, if I remember well, you should remove the thermal pad (if you choose to do that) with a plastic scraper and finish off with Q-tips dipped in rubbing alcohol. Do not re-use a thermal pad once it's used. You have to clean it off.

Sorry about that. Actually, here's a link to the AMD Atlhon 64 FX (more powerful than Athlon 64).

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Tec...alResources/0,,30_182_869_9480,00.html

Well, you end up paying a lot more for the higher end anyway. If you get a socket 939 motherboard now, you can upgrade later to a dual core processor on it. They say dual core processors will provide a significant boost in UT2007. Dual core processors are expected to come out for the consumer market between Sept and Dec of this year.
