Hello,

I would like to purchase a video capture card so I can record my VHS tapes into digital format (Mpeg2 is the best format right?) onto my computer. I don't know how this works though. Can anyone give me advice of where to start (brands, links to helpful websites, features to look for)? I already have a regular graphics card in the Radeon 9700 (it has a CRT, DVI, and S-video out), so I would need just a regular capture card. I would like to get a card that just does enough, as I don't plan on doing any professional work with a capture card.

Mainly, my old VHS tapes are starting to degrade and would like to save them onto my computer before the tapes' quality becomes unacceptable. I may also want to record TV programs into Mpegs as well.

The Leadtek 2000XP is a good overall choice for a tuner/capture card.

What you have to realize though is that no amount of MPEG2 work will produce DVD-quality from a VHS source. The output is only as good as what you're feeding it - in this case, 352x240 NTSC video. Don't go overkill on the capture quality - MPEG1 would probably even be sufficient, but there's no harm in overshooting a little.

Check some of the card reviews at VCDHelp for more information.
