Can you even change most wireless routers' settings wirelessly? Anyway, option 2 = win. And when your ISP ditches you for downloading all that goat porn - you have an emergency connection to fall back on.

yes, once you are connected to it you go in IE and do 192.168.1.1 or whatever for the set model, and then you login. If the thing isnt locked down, the un/pw is either admin admin or admin password probably

BTW: I am NOT advocating doing this, its more than likely illegal.

Thing is, default settings (which most people use, and obviously these people are using if their router isn't secured) on wireless routers generally only allow settings to be accessed / modified from a PC hooked up by wire. I know this is how mine is; it's one of the first things stated in the manual.

You didn't think that through, did you?

Best suggestion so far! I like how you think.

You go you bad boy you. Personally I am glad there are people like you out there. It helps me sleep at night knowing there are people who find the need to take it upon themselves to find an unsecured wireless connection (because it's oh so difficult) and hop on it. Then to advertise how dumb people are for having such a connection unsecured. Then trying to teach these idiots (who you've never met and have never done anything to you) a lesson.

GO GET EM TIGER!

In my apt complex there are like 200 people that share the same wireless connection. They're not on at the same time but it's really funny since there's generally 18 people on at any given time.

Of course it's unsecured and the person has no clue what's going on.

I checked the logs and pretty much 90% of the traffic is to myspace.com. The college kids here are obsessed with that site. I was so tempted to block it but I figured I'd cause a riot.

If I was to lock down that router everyone here would be screwed. So to this day, 2 years later, everyone still uses it free and clear. There are a couple other signals that are shared as well and then there are those bright enough to lock theirs down.

I never even thought about netsending people. I think some people would freak out.

The biggest plus to having an unsecured wireless signal floating around is that when you move into a new place you have internet right away. Otherwise you might have to wait a week for the cable to get hooked up.

That's funny....I changed a bunch of peoples' SSIDs to funny things sometimes, but that's about it...but when I got my own router, I set the SSID to "GTFO My Router, Bitch!" and locked it down...I heard a couple people talking about it. I loled to myself.

I use my neighbor's wireless as a primary connection here. I live in an apartment complex in a neighborhood, and at any given time, there are two unsecured wireless signals which I can connect to, one at 54Mbps. I already pay for an internet connection for my desktop computer, and I have a cat5 cable in my room for transferring large files to my laptop, but it's so much easier to use this wireless signal than to use my wired connection which is a pain with my laptop, or to buy my own wireless router.

Both of you should be locked up as Terrists according to the law now.

your neighbor for having an open connection and you for tapping it.

but you can defend it as "my laptop sees the neighbor signal as the stronger signal, and ergo, connected to the best possible connection automatically" if you do get caught, you can't really use this if you stole a car "this car's proximity to me was less than my own car, and ergo I take it for a ride since the key is inside"
