I´m sitting here in a Hampton Inn outside of Alajuela, near the capital of San Jose. This whole place is beautiful. I´ve been in rain forest, cloud forest, gorgeous beaches, straight jungle, and at the edge of a volcano crater. On all of our drives somewhere and looking out, the views are amazing.
Easily the most beautiful place I´ve ever been. Period.
In the cloud forest, I did a zipline tour through it, going from tree to tree on these lines, attached with a harness, it was one of the coolest things I´ve ever done. Now getting up there was 35km of the worst.road.ever. Not paved, rocky and muddy as all hell, about 1.5 lanes wide, obviously no guardrails, very foggy (hence cloud forest) and rain like I´ve never seen before, tropical, and very hard, not like California rain. fastest going was about 40km/h (25mph). Craziest thing was that trucks and full sized tour buses were on there! At one point, I had to go back down the hill in reverse so I could let a tour bus down. My aunt was going crazy the way up, she couldn´t take the road at all. Every time we saw a truck or hit a particularly bad bump or stretch, it was ¨Jiminy Christmas¨(who really says that anymore??) or ¨Ay dios mio¨
It´s been a great time so far, I still have about another week here. Going to go to the Caribbean side and see the beaches there, south of the port of Limon, then head to the northwestern side and stay at my aunt´s beach house in Flamingo before we leave.
I´ve got about 200 pics so far on my digital camera, with another 128mb card left. I´ll post them all when I get back. Tons of great vistas, cute monkeys that came into our tour boat, some alligators, iguanas and lizards, hummingbirds, butterflies and flowers.
