I dont think I have any Vision services, but since it is a vision enabled phone, could I use it free of cost during my nights and weekends? i realize u need a dial up ISP correct?

i hear the data cable is expensive...

Data cable is ~$30 and it'll cost you $0.02/kb since you don't have vision on your plan.
Damn, that could get expensive quick.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing....
So, more knowledgeable people than me.... Are there plans available so I could download on a "free nights and weekends" without incurring huge charges? If so... I will for the first time in my life actually have a reason to get a cell phone :Q (yes, I don't have a cell phone!) and a reason to get a laptop :Q (actually, if I'm not home with a computer, I'm at work with a computer... can't use the computer in the car while I'm driving, at least not safely... and, if I'm at neither place, I don't need my computer. But now I will!!!)

The only way to not be charged the $0.02/kb is by adding the $10/month Unlimited Vision plan. Thats unlimited anytime, not just on the weekends.

yeah, from what i heard the modem usage DOES NOT come out of your regular minutes if you have unlimited vision plan. can you confirm this aphex? also, the rep told me it's $15/month for unlimited vision plan, not the $10 you mentioned.

Yes, unlimited vision DOES NOT come out of your regular minutes.

As for the $15, ask for the unlimited vision without the download credits (for the stupid crap on their webpage), that one should be $10.

Actually, Data Cable is only $14.99 + $5 shipping from Gomadic.com :D

I thought I read somewhere that some cables work better then others? Like some will let you use the net but not transfer contacts/pics? I don't recall but I do remember the one RS sells was the "good" one.

Actually, the difference in the cables is actually if it charges your phone as well. Radioshack (which sells the FutureDial cable) actually sucks in many's opinion. Not only does it not charge your phone, but its locked to ONLY work with the FutureDial software.

The cable i purchased from Gomadic charges my phone while plugged in, AND is compatable with any software programs available..

Oh really.... That I did not know. I just bought the cable. Haven't gotten sync and/or media master yet. About the data plans. If you have a phone there are now 3 data plans I think. One is setup specifically for data useage. Also, if you just want data, the PCMCIA/CF connection cards will be noticeably faster then the phone hooked up via cable. Something to do with compression software as I recall. Something to think about if you really don't need a cell phone.

There's no $10 vision anymore Aphex. There's a $15 picture mail one (for those of us w/ camera phones) and another $15 one that's for games/apps. You get $5 dl credit w/ the camera one and $10 dl credit w/ the other one. With the camera one you also get the picture mail thing (I think that's only for the 8100 tho). Rumor has it that Sprint is going to start charging for useage of their picture site (for those like you and I who have "old" vision plans).

thanks for the reply. i was going to upgrade my phone to the same phone you have, but decided against it since that also means i have to switch my gf's phone to a vision-enabled phone. but since she loves her current phone so much, i figured i didn't have a use for a Sanyo 5300. maybe i'll buy one now to use it as a modem for my Thinkpad.

two more questions. does the same data cable allow the phone's digital cam pix to be downloaded to the computer? does it use USB interface (on computer's end)? thanks.

Well when i changed my plan last thursday, I was given the option of the $10 Vision Plan (w/o any credits) if i so desired.

Hmm.. it's $5/month for me. Last time I called them to add a new phone, I b!tched to them how I cannot add another phone to share my current plan. I finally reached a compromise with the retention department. The offered me another separate plan for my second phone and still put me within my budget. Then the lady asked if I wanted to try Vision for free? I said sure, and asked how much it would be after the trial period. She said $10/month. So, I said "oh ok, so it's $10/month per phone?" She said, "$10/month for BOTH phone." :)

Well i guess its the same for me then, because I have 2 phones using the Unlimited Vision for the same price.

Just because they don't offer it anymore doesn't mean they don't have it. You just need to talk to the right CSR when you call them. Some are a PITA, but some are willing to work with you. Your best bet is talking to the retention department CSR tho. They are the nicest ones.

Not exactly. Didn't you say you are on the shared plan? My two phones don't share minutes, each of them has their own minutes. They are both billed to my account but they have separate billing, so it will show up as $5/month on each bill.

When I had SprintPCS with vision late last year I was always PISSED at Vision b/c it was a) slow as balls, b) never working, and c) glitchy.

Nice to see they worked those problems out. Still never going back to Sprint, though. Horrid, horrid customer support. :|

This is very true. Sprint corporate most definitely knows of people using their phones with laptops. I'm happy to have you as a customer (you help me pay my bills!), but Sprint's pretty ticked about the whole thing. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!

So they offer unlimited service, then get pissed when you take advantage of it? I'm a bit confused. :p

I take it their vision plan isn't meant for use with anything other than phones or something?

depends on the area too. i have pcs vision on my sanyo 5300 and it's okay. at least for me in the s.f. bay area, it's alittle laggy. takes alittle while before it'll actually do anything. once it starts going though, it's fine.

Where do you get the USB cable? Can you use it to sync the pictures? I checked the Sprint site and I didn't find anything for my Sanyo 5100.

Yeah, I heard that Sprint intended the unlimited Vision to be used on wireless web services (on the phone). Not as a laptop internet connection. If they notice to much usage they will close your account.

Right. We have air cards for laptops. The unlimited Vision you get with your phone is supposed to be for your phone only. If you look on the site, you'll see that there are different rates for the data cards and they're MUCH higher. The network is drained much more by laptops than phones because most of our phones only display WAP-enabled sites, which are much smaller and quicker to d/l.
