http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/11/0...ar-prison-sentence-bay-area-station-shooting/

When I first saw the video I knew the cop deserved harsh punishment. The guy was not struggling and did not need to be tased. Apparently during his training somewhere he could not figure out the difference between a taser and his gun. If he wasn;t so hell bent on delivering some pain... this would have never have happened. I am surprised that a cop actually got some prison time. If there was no video I am sure he would have walked.

2 years for "accidentally" fatally shooting someone in the back who is face down on the ground?

Don't play dumb.

The careless idiot thought he grabbed his stun gun. That's the ONLY explanation and you KNOW it.

yes, but the sentencing was today.

it's all over the news here, of course. Even local Oakland police stations (the trial was moved to LA, iirc) were boarding up their windows and in anticipation of riots.

You got to be fucking kidding me. You really think he intentionally shot the guy in the back?

lord_emperor watched too many cartoons growing up.

The cop was surrounded by cop-hating civilians that might be expected to inflict vigilante justice, and you suggest it was intentional!

So what? How much time would YOU get for an "unintentional" death? I'd bet everything I own it would be more than 2 years.

Someone should carelessly shoot him in the face. Hopefully he gets the shit beat out of him every single minute he spends in jail.

Well according to the article

"Involuntary manslaughter has a sentencing range of two to four years, while the gun allegation carries a term of three, four or 10 years."

So yeah, two to 4 years, so its possible to get more, but its perfectly within the legal standard. We should all be happy that people like you aren't in power who puts their feelings before what the law says.

Thanks for restating my point. He got the absolute minimum possible.

Nope I think an experienced police officer mistook a gun for a taser, and proceeded to pull the trigger on said gun still thinking it was his taser. It's not like the police have training on these sort of things. He killed somebody and said "opps I thought it was my taser!" Since he's a cop he didn't expect anything except a paid vacation here while the incident was "investigated" I think he did it on purpose. But I'll play devils advocate here, if it was an accident, this is the kind of person who needs to be locked up because they are a threat to the world. I've never fired a taser gun and I'll bet all the money I have I couldn't mistake a gun for one. Also why would an officer taze a man who's on the ground with his hands behind him and complying with his every request? He's either a bad cop, an idiot cop or a combination of both.

So this cop accidentally shoots a guy and goes to prison, while the real assholes out there probably get a slap on the wrist/high five from the union and it's business as usual.

This entire incident has been 100% ridicules.

I love how the media always say how this was a white cop but never saying the victim was a black felon nor do they mention he was brawling on a BART train putting other peoples lives in danger while being drunk and high while possibly committing his 3rd strike.

Not saying the guy *deserved* to die, but when you put yourself in those situations, bad things happen.

White people act up in the subway also. Here in NY, ride ANY subway train out of lower/Midtown Manhattan and you'll see what I mean. Take your thug bullshit somewhere else.

But...but...when is the last time you've heard of one of these White guys shot? In the back? While detained on the floor? With multiple officers around?

My point was that race had nothing to do with this but the only narrative the media reports is that of a racist white cop shooting an unarmed black man.

Why? Because he's an idiot and screwed up?

You're saying that when an idiot makes a stupid / careless / clumsy mistake, he deserves to be shot in the face or beaten senselessly for years?

Unless you've never made a mistake in your entire life, then shut your F-ing mouth.

Of course. All he did was "accidentally" shoot a Black in the back. It's nothing more than a misdemeanor these days.

STOP USING THE DAMN QUOTES! You really think he did that intentionally with a mob of vengeful people around? You're just as delusional as the punks I grew up with.

So you're making up arguments to support your delusional outlook on HUMAN BEINGS that choose to work in law enforcement. He wasn't what anyone would call "experienced." He was awkwardly hunched over and clearly suffering performance anxiety. Also, he had a history of that very problem during training. Where do you get the idea that he was complying with every request? All accounts are that he resisted. Why do you think multiple officers were trying to get the cuffs on him?

That accident was just that, an accident albeit a highly negligent one. Just make him do his 2 years and should've added a lifetime of community service.

here in the bay area people keep pointing out that vick killed a dog and got 4 years and mehserle killed a human and he'll end up getting 7 months (yes 7 months is how much time hell actually end up serving for shooting an unarmed person in the back)

i think he did deliberately shoot him but maybe didnt expect to kill. the victim begged him not to shoot him because he had a daughter and that is what set the thug cops off and made one of them pull the gun and shoot him in the back. they didnt have any reason to pull anything out while he was lying on the ground, a stun gun or a gun

if grant had killed mehserle, hed be on death row

but being an idiot shouldnt be a defense or absolve someone of responsibility either. he didnt even express any type remorse until he was convicted, not that shedding some crocodile tears should get him a lower sentence either.

mehserle is clearly a violent person and a danger to the public, he needs to be taken off the streets for a good long time
