Helicopter Wire Strike Cutters

edro

Lifer
A guy at work was talking about The Dark Knight, when the helicopter was taken down by the cable.
He said he was pissed, because most police helicopters have cable cutters built in.

I looked into it and am now curious how often a "cable strike" happens.

Example

Even if you do hit a power line with this cable cutter, wouldn't it mess your flight up enough to crash anyway?
Are they just a last ditch effort?

I guess at ~125mph, they would be pretty effective.

Isn't it funny how being an all knowing nerd can ruin a movie like that?

I couldn't stand 300 because I had watched History Channel documentary before and knew that they way they were fighting in the movie wasn't how the real battle was fought. I couldn't even finish the movie I was so pissed.

I guess people were right when they told me being stupid had it's advantages. I don't have to worry about ruining movies due to my knowledge.

oh common. 300 may have been innaccurate, but it was kinda cool and worth at least *one* viewing.

I couldn't do it. When the guy went out in front of the pack and started fighting one on one...I was done.

Wait wait wait, you mean there were no uber immortals in the real battle? You SOB, you ruin everything :|

If a helicopter hits a power line (Telephone line, electrical line, guy wire for a tower, or any other wire obstacle), the rotor system may become entangled with the wire, and catastrophic failure of the rotor system could lead to total destruction of the aircraft. The WSPS was developed to reduce the severity of a wire obstacle collision by diverting the wire into the cutter blade assemblies. The cutter blades affixed to the top and bottom of the frontal area of the aircraft will usually cut the wire and eliminate the hazard.

The WSPS system protects 90% of the frontal area of the helicopter, and reduces the hazard from most wire strikes. With the WSPS, the pilot has a 95% chance of surviving a single wire strike. The odds of survival decrease as the number of wires increases. 2 wires will reduce the chances to 75%, 3 wires to 50%, and 4 wires to about 25%. Although the WSPS system is quite effective, care must still be used to avoid all wire obstacles. Apache, Cobra, and Blackhawk helicopters all have a smaller, less noticeable WSPS system on them.

I thought the helicopter in the Dark Knight hit the wires with the supports between the skids and the bottom of the chopper.

They did.

And getting pissed over shit like that is kind of stupid.

Wait.

You mean the part where Batman jumped out of the building after Rachel and caught her mid air and then landed on a car below without deploying any visible means of deceleration was fine, but a helicopter catching a wire with it's skids is what he took issue with?

He wasn't pissed... he just noticed it.
I said he got pissed to exagerate his position.

Yeah, this... I was pissed when that happened. I was like, "Oh, okay... so you can fall at speeds of over 100mph, hit a car and be fine? MAYBE FOR BATMAN, BUT HER?"

I'm sure this system is designed to cut wires that are horizontal to the ground like normal power lines, not ones placed at odd angles like the movie,

It's also a movie...

so how were they really fighting?

WTF!

I Google "dark knight helicopter wires" to see if there are any screenshots, and this thread is the #1 Result!

That was fast...
