I'm in the mountains of NC, and we have been getting rain from Helene since about 4 PM on Wednesday. It's now 10 PM on Thursday, and we have had over 13 inches of rain, and it is still raining, with the heaviest predicted to hit overnight and into Friday. This much rain in the mountains produces some scary stuff, with flash flooding, mud slides, and slope failures. Thought light at times, it has not stopped raining for the past 30+ hours.

The wind hasn't got here yet, but we are under a tropical storm warning, in addition to all the flood warnings. Wind will easily bring down a large number of trees, and the ground is completely saturated, taking out power, homes, roads.

At least here, we have lots of 'high ground' here, something many folks don't have handy.

Some reports are saying this is a once in a 1,000 years rainfall.

In 2004 the remnants of two hurricanes (Frances and Ivan) crossed over the area, and produced the greatest 2 day rain total... well we are there, and it is still raining.

Take care bro. Stay inside. Evacuate if necessary.

The one and 2 category storms can be fun but Helene came ashore as a Cat 4 moving around 25mph.

I wish you luck and hope it doesn't spawn many tornados

When are we going to get our first sharknado?

All is well in allisolm land. Have spent most of this morning checking on and checking in with relatives, neighbors, and friends. Fortunately we have a 100% survival rate. Can't ask for more than that. Thanks for the concern.

We got none of that flooding. Wind, some tornados...now, it's the run for gas/propane. We've made 3 trips, 50 miles, in 36 hrs. Other than personal needs/food preservation, got 2 Ma's frozen milk trying to save.

My daughter's husband's mom and step dad (Now known as the in-laws) just moved to Biltmore North Carolina and bought a house in July. The MIL was out here this week. She is the type that likes to hype everything so she was telling us how great NC is. Now he is in the house without power and she is trying to make her way back to the house.

We got butts kicked hard. 18 inches of rain at my house, no power probably for weeks, but worse is water, system destroyed, estimates in weeks to get water back. Just got cell service back early today.
House ok, daughter house ok,
Many many roads gone, two interstates may be months or years to reopen, one still closed but days to reopen
30 confirmed dead, firefighter grandson said it will go much higher. Many areas still completely inaccessible
Because of interstates relief just get in here with supplies and equipment.
In short, we are fucked.

That is just in my county, hard to get news with even cell service out.
Many nearby counties are probably in similar shape
Grandson working heard his battalion chief who was off duty screaming on the radio for help, but was washed away and died hit him, and every FF hard, as they couldn't get there because of flooding.
Whole families are gone, buried in mud

Also another FF both grandsons also died when his home was wiped out by flash flood or mud

Some areas recorded 25 inches of rain in less than 48 hours

Fuuuuuuuuck

First two questions
1) Are you safe? (Food, water, shelter, enough meds?)
2) Are you insured?

I’m sorry to hear - we’ve been through similar. It sucks but you eventually get through.

I had a couple of friends who lived in the hills of Tennessee 20+ years ago. They got hit by the remnants of a hurricane…wiped their farm out. They lost all their livestock to the flooding.

Heart goes out to those of you impacted. Death toll will keep rising, many are still missing, and there are areas cutoff/ isolated with no communications.

I don't know what they are going to do about I-40. It's completely washed away in at least one area. They would have to make it a bridge now?

The swath of destruction is nightmarish. So many states affected.
