Is my HD getting ready to die?

Well reason I ask is because I have been used a power supply extension cable so that my power plug can reach from my HD to my 3rd optical drive. Well after take a DVD-Rom apart to do a good lens cleaning I turn my PC on to find the HD spins up but just after my PC detects it it turns off. Like the power just quit. Well I rest my PC and the HD spins up no problem and loads win XP well when it gets into there it turns off again. Windows just locks up won't let me into my PC or restart my PC from start menu. But the mouse will function.

Anyway after taking the extension off completely it powers up without any problems and doesnt turn off. Any ideas why it could have done this? Theres no clicking sounds or anything. Just curious if I need to start shopping for a new 40GB? I have a 20gig WD 7200RPM ATA100 BTW.

Oh yeah I bought it brand new OEM. Can OEM products be RMAed or are they not warranted? It is close to a year old but not quite a year yet.

You should have a 3 year warranty on the drive if you purchased it from a store, Newegg, etc. In the hard drive world, OEM refers to drives sold to system builders like Dell and Gateway. The only warranty you get on those are from Gateway or Dell. Non-retail packaged drives sold by Newegg, MWave, etc., are considered 'bare' drives and have the same warranty as the retail versions.

Just go to Western Digital's website and plug in your serial number and you'll get your warranty info.

Anyway, if everything works without your extension cable, I would suspect that as your problem, not the drive.
