Heeelllppp! Onboard Video vs Video Card?????

I just built my first computer, I have a very simple question, first of all I have MSI AMD motherboard with ProSavage 8 video chip, to play games like "marine sharpshooter" do I need a 3D video accelerator card? I tried playing this game and got the message could'nt set 3D emulation mode. I went to game website and they said I need up date my drivers. I went to my device manager, no display adapter listed, there was a "?" mark by the video controller, I clicked on that and it said the drivers for this device not installed went thru hardware install and the final message was hardware not installed drivers not found. Please someone could you answer this for me......

The (?) most likely means that the system doesn't know what kind of graphics card you have, so it's stuck you with a generic, barebones, no-3D driver. To get any kind of 3D features, you need the proper driver. What is the exact make and model of your motherboard?

I am not familiar with that game and the requirements that it needs. I assume you are using windows so right click on desktop and go into the properties and see if your video card is listed.

To be honest I used to have a diamond (i think) savage video card, but their drivers were worthless. I'm not sure how they are now since it has been some time since i used their products. Do you have an agp slot? If so you might want to check out the game you are currently trying to play and future games you may wish to purchase and buy a video card for your system. Usually you won't need the latest and greatest card for current games, I always stay a few revisions behind the market leaders, plus I game very little. You might try one of the ATI 9100's or 9600's or nvidia 42-4600's. The best thing I guess is to do some research and see what card and feature set you can get for the best money. Some of the cards I mentioned can be had for less than $100.00.

Good luck.

Savage had great color and 2D but horrible 3D. Perhaps the larger issue is the way integrated video uses a portion of your system memory, which makes it kind of hard to get the most out of your system memory. In any case, the savages peaked out with freecell.

Daveshel makes a good point...onboard video using shared memory...that's just asking for trouble. With graphics cards so cheap right now, it would make much more sense to grab a cheap Radeon or Geforce4.
