I wanted to format a WD 80 GB HD so I could do a fresh install of XP pro... Now after plugging in the drive, my computer is running VERY slow! It took about an 1 hour and 15 minutes to get through the "Copying Files" part of Windows xp. Now i put back in my hard drive that I was using before, and IT runs slow....

Any help?

Could it be jumpers in the wrong spot? I had both set to master when I installed them and they are plugged in on the end of the IDE cord.
Also, after booting, it is at the desktop. Are there any tests that I could run? Any help would be appreciated, as I will be anxiously awaiting replies tonight.

Thanks in advance!

try going into the bios and resetting it, also, are you using the same IDE cable? Maybe you're using a 40pin instead of the 80pin.

Yes it is the same IDE cable as before... Any clue as to how to reset the bios on a dimension 8200? I didn't see taht as an option...

CPU is at 100%?

ctrl-alt-delete

see what the task manager says is using all your cpu. (system idle is ok)

slow performance like that could be a virus, have you tried scaning? Adaware has a really good scanner that will pick up spyware and other programs that could be stealling your presious CPU.

Try ctrl-shift-esc (all on the left side). Or right click the task bar and click task manager.
