Hedgehogs!

pontifex

Lifer
wow, i never realized hedgehogs were so cute. look at the little guys!

awww, man...i live in PA, so much for getting one, look at this BS:
Pennsylvania
A very unfortunate political battle has developed within the State of Pennsylvania making hedgehogs illegal to the point where threats have been made against even the transport of hedgehogs through the state on the way to another state.
All of this is the result of an initial (and unusual) law established in the 1990's. Under that law, hedgehogs within the state were legal, but it was illegal to import fresh bloodlines into the state. A few breeders violated that law resulting in the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) declaring all out war on all hedgehogs within the state. Breeder's homes have been raided and their hedgehogs confiscated with all of the zeal of a major drug bust. Suffice it to say, owning a hedgehog in Pennsylvania under the draconian rule of PGC is extremely dangerous for both owner and hedgehog.

HEDGEHOGS!!!!

Saw one at the local Havahart and it sold for around $200. If those things breed like hamsters that's some major change.

Pic of our hedgehog

She unfortunately died over the summer

My wife bought it from a breeder in MD I believe, thankfully the PA Game Commission didn't get wind of our pet

I'm in a similar situation with my adoration for ferrets. I owned two of them for several years when I lived in Washington, but here in California they are illegal. From what I've gathered, they were outlawed on the premise that pet ferrets pose a threat to native wildlife -- like a stray ferret would start up a wild population and disrupt the predator/prey balance. The problem is that such an idea is simply false. Ferrets have about as much chance of starting a wild population as do Yorkshire Terriers.

I have always found ferrets to smell like ass.

they look awesome but there to small for me. i'd get depressed keeping such a happy little thing alone in a cage, but i don't think it and kitty would get along if allowed to run around.

I've only seen one hedgehog that was a pet, and it was the meanest thing i've ever encountered in my life. (not counting MichaelD)

Hedgehogs are solitary animals in the wild and only associate with another hedgehog for breeding. They are very content to be left alone to go about their business, and it takes awhile (4 months for us) to get them comfortable with new owners.

I wouldn't worry too much about the cat. If the cat swiped at the hedgehog and hit the quills, the cat would most certainly NEVER attempt that again. Those things are incredibly sharp.

R.I.P. Murray.

Too true.
