Hec PSU Quality

Are they good for general use? There will be not be any gaming on this new rig I'm building, so I was looking for a cheaper PSU. Also, my main concern is how reliable are they and will they last a few years.

Heat will not be a big issue, since I'm picking up a few fans on the 26th and it'll be a low power system.
 
I wasn't expecting high quality, but something that's decent. But it doesn't matter anymore, I found a better deal for an OCZ PSU, not high quality, but good for low budget stuff.

Why not? I picked up Antec EarthWatts 430W models for $15 AR just over a year ago as well as Corsair 400W models for $18 AR. It's not out of the question! 😛

(not saying that this PSU is good though...I don't know).

Interesting to say the least.....I personally would doubt your facts.......but thats just me!!
 
For what it's worth, I've got one in mine and it's been pretty nice so far. I got the 585w off of eBay for under $25 after cashback. It's powering a 4870, couple hard drives, and 2 optical drives with no problems really.

If you won't be using them for gaming, then they should be ok for you. All our servers use HEC PSUs (mostly HEC WinPower+ models, or HEC Raptors when the WinPower+ models are unavailable). They typically last 5-6 years, and our servers are always up, we almost never shut them down.
 
I've owned a few HEC power supplies. They aren't PC Power & Cooling quality, but they aren't priced that way either.
I like their build and performance quality for the money.

HEC builds some OK units...they also build crap...those linked in the first post are crap

HEC makes very nice power supplies but like any manufacturer you should make sure to get what is appropriate for your needs.

I'd suggest stepping up to an Orion, Raptor or Zephyr model though if you can.

If you're just building a internet/word processing box then the generic models will work fine.

As far as reliability I've been using HEC's personally and used to sell them professionally for 10+ years and have yet to see a single unit fail (that wasn't the result of a lightning strike, and that was one time).

Currently I have an Orion model in the wife's PC that has been going strong for 5 years, various friends have them still that have been going for longer than that. I have a new Zephyr to replace the shitpile PC Power & Cooling (post OCZ buyout) I had, and it's very solid as usual. I also have a little tiny flex-atx HEC in a little PC that works great as well, it's about 7 years old.

Well they're crap 'cause they're old, really old.
Could be a 5 year old design with no or just passive PFC.

But if you'll know what to go for, such as the HEC-400TE or the 700W TE (I'd rather not take anything in between!), they are pretty decent, not the best but the price isn't that high either, and not very beautiful either, they still sell units in grey boxes without sleeves...

'cmon, that's a 300W Unit with a 430W Sticker on it...

So it's no wonder it doesn't perform very well...
