If you like Arch Enemy .... you may want to check out "At The Gates". They are the founders of the "Gothenburg" style of melodic Death. Though my favorite band of this style is still 90s Era In Flames. I haven't heard any recent stuff from Shadows Fall, but I remember when I first saw them play live, it was quite a few years ago, they Really Really know how to put on a great show.

God Forbid is pretty good, so is Mastodon.
Trivium and Killswitch engage are also pretty good too.

I think dilinger escape plan sucks, but thats my opinion.

I am getting tired of bands not playing guitar solos and crappy singers. I want to hear a singer sing, not just scream really bad (This is not punk, its metal).

i discounted LOG for about 6 months after discovering them since i couldn't get into randy's vocals. learned to love them, though, and now i can't imagine the band with anything else. seen them twice and plan on seeing them 2 more times this summer. the LOG/Bodom tour was the most insanely energetic thing i've experienced.

yeah, dillinger doesn't appeal to the standard metal sensibilities (classically influenced guitars, heaviness, carefully constructed harmonies, etc). their polyrhythms and meter changes are mind boggling, though. guitars are jazz influenced rather than classical. like them or not, they're insanely skilled at what they do.

i like guitar solos as much as the next guy, but cohesive songwriting is more important to me.

Yeah, I have no idea how you came to the conclusion that those bands are "new".

Probably the same way as people who claimed Metallica was a new band when they suddenly became popular mainstream with the Black Album. Simply because they didn't know them before must mean they're new. 'Have you heard that great new band, Metallica?' (...)

Here we go with the music elitists... "Dude, I have been listening to them since I saw them underground in Jacksonville, back in '86."

Who cares WHEN you heard about them. If I had just heard about Metallica today, I would still love them and would enjoy listening to their original albums.

I just recently re-discovered Pink Floyd (I knew the hits, but never bothered with the whole CDs).

Music Elitists =

My comment has nothing to do with elitism. Just a fact. They are far from being new and if you really listen to metal then you have had to of heard of them.
if you really listen to metal then you have had to of heard of them
That screams elitism to me.
I would say I listen to quite a lot of metal (100+ albums by various artists), and I'd never heard of those two bands. It depends on what type of metal you listen to.
I bet there are many bands I could name I might consider "well known" that you might not have heard of, because they may be from a different place than you, or maybe a slightly different style of metal etc.
And I could probably only name one or two Metallica songs off the top of my head, and those are due to covers.

Elitism my ass. As with any genre there are poster boys for the genre. Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage and Lamb Of God are the poster boys of metal at the moment.

If you listen to current metal bands then are bound to hear about all three of those bands.

As for Arch Eneny, they have been around for a decently long time. They are pretty respected in the metal arena so by default most metal listeners have at least heard of them.

It has nothing to do with elistism just the fact that if you listen to current metal you have to live in a hole not to hear about certain bands.

By newer I meant band that I was just getting into.
Besides, most band, when people do get to hear them all over the place, is when they actually make it big, and stop being underground, and unfortunately I don't have to check the local bar very oftenl

Anyway, here is another newer one 3 Inches of blood. They have really good metal riffs, but the vocals suck so bad. Very loud piercing voice.

I also like Cradle of filth, great vocals. And Killswith engaged could be better with differend vocals.

I guess i'll find more talent at Ozzfest 2005 this summer!
