Hi guys, I'm pretty new to overclocking but not computers. I just got my new amd 1800, epox, and an alpha heatsink.

What grit should I finish the heatsink with? I just started wetsanding it with 1000grit. I have it really smooth right now, should I go finer sandpaper?
Also, I don't get why I should put polish on it? I don't understand how the heatsink being shiny with helping with heat transfer. Any help here?
And last, how thin should I put on the thermal compound? And do I put it on both the heatsink and cpu or just the cpu?

Thanks in advance,
Jason

whie i cant answer the otehr questions i can help with one.

For the best performance its recomended that you take a small amount of heatsink compound and rub it on teh area (not all over) of the heatsink where it touches the core, this fills the fine holes in the HS, after that wipe the excess off (all ya can see) Then out it on the Core as noraml and apply the hs

look there, its for Arctic Silver II but it applies to all thermal compounds...

i myself lapped my hs, and the best grit i've found to polish off the metal is 2000. i personall don't polish of the metal, so i don't have any chemicals on the metal that can lessen the heat tranferabilty of my hs. hope this helps.

tchybrid,
I thought the same thing, The less polish on it the more the thermal compound will do.
