Heatsink installation help

I got my heatsink to go on fine. the only problem is that it didn't have any plastic at the bottom when I got it. All it had was a pink hardened substance at the bottom. Never done this before, so I wanted to know if the substance should be hardened already, or whether i messed something up.

Well, there shouldn't be any plastic whatsoever on the heatsink where it touches the CPU. It should have been pure metal. The only thing between the cpu and the heatsink would be the thermal grease/ arctic silver whatever you use.

I'm not using a thermal compoud right now. On heatsinks, there is already a thermal compound covered by a strip of plastic. There was no plastic on this particular heatsink. I wanted to know if it makes a difference whether there was no plastic.

Oh, yeah, you're talking about a retail heatsink with a thermal pad. No, it doesn't matter about the plastic.

Thanks for the help. Hopefully, my processor won't burn. I will eventually by some artic silver, but I need to find somewhere with free shipping, or combine shipping with something else. I'm not overclocking as of yet, so its not too important. Thanks again for the help.
