Hello,

I just got a 64 AMD clawhammer mobile chip to run in my 754 board but when I did a contact test (putting Arctic Silver on the heatsink and putting heatsink in place on the processor then removing the HSF to see if there was any thermal paste on the processor) it seems that there is hardly any contact.

Do I need a special HSF to run the mobile AMD 64 in my desktop board, or any other special gear or mod?

Thanks!

There are a few ways to take care of it. One you should have bought a cooler you can use without the attached bracket system. There is another way from what I understand. There are standoffs on the mounting brackets that can be busted or filed off to accomodate but I really don't know that for sure. Look at the bracket...you don't ahve to make up a lot of ground.

Thanks for answering. So, if I were to buy a hsf which mounts directly to the board via the mount holes (i.e., eliminate the bracket altogether) that would probably work well?

Yes. The Zalman CNPS7700Cu comes with it's own mounting brackets, allowing it to touch a bare core (= what you want). The Thermalright XP series do this, too, but they need an additional fan.

I had that...it is either loud or cools very poorly. Consider the Arctic cooling Freezer. It doesn't touch the outside nipples...just the core but still uses the brackets. it is much quieter and cools as well as the Zalman when the Zalman is disgustingly loud
