Heatsink Fan Issues

So, yesterday (Friday, July 20th), to make a long story short, the video card on my DVR (mythtv, sempron based) burned out.

I initially tried rebooting the box several times. Everything would spin up and then shutdown. Not good. Noticed a bad smell, again not good. Pulled the video card and noticed a bunch of black on the back of the gpu. So, my video card is toast.

Ok, not a huge deal because it is really the DVR server, so I can run it headless. So, I restarted it again and it booted up. However, now the cpu heatsink fan does not run. But, what is strange is when I boot the box and turn the power off, the fan will initially spin and then stop moving. So, it is getting some power, and then decides nope.

I checked all the connections. Everything seems tight. I can actually run the box just fine, but I am worried about the lack of the cpu fan and the fact that it may point to other issues. I will probably go get another fan today, just to make sure that that is not it, since that is cheap and easy.

Any suggestions??

Thanks!

It does sound like the cpu, but its always worth trying a CMOS reset just for the hell of it.

Well, I turned everything off last night. I did not want to risk the chance of burning the house down. ;)

Started it back up this morning, and the fan seems to be working now. I don't think that it is temperature controlled, but it may be. I have restarted it several times and after a while the fan kicks on, so that may be the case. Something in the BIOS may have gotten reset with changes. Unfortunately, since I have no video card now, it is a bit hard to tell. :)

I am going to keep an eye on it for the next couple of days.

Thanks for the help!
