Can someone just tell me which heatsink/fan and system fans I should buy for my Athalon XP 2100+
I am sick of how hot and how loud it runs. My Motherboard is the Giga-byte GA-7DXR+ if that helps.
I am looking for someone to tell me which exact heatsink and fan to buy, if you could sell links to the product I would also really appreciate it. I do not understand anything about heatsink and fans and am looking for someone to just tell me how to fix the noise and cooling problems. Thanks very much in advance.

Go to the cases & cooling forum. Lots of info there, especially the 2 threads at the top.

This is not commonly known, but the Athalon is the mentally unstable, horribly disfigured member of the family that no one at AMD talks about. The Athalon is usually locked up in the deepest dark corner of the basement at AMD's HQ. I could tell you more, but I would be risking my life..... Wait! Someone is coming...

OMG!!! OH NO! AIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! NOOOOOO!O!OO!O!!!!

I put together a GA-7DXR+ system before, and if I remember correctly the board has mounting holes, I would suggest going the route of a Alpha Pal8045, or if you need even a tad bit more extreme cooling, a SLK-800. Both are fairly expensive, running between 25-70 dollars. As far as noise would go, Panaflo fans are hands down the best performing fans. They use a hydro-wave bearing design, that lets their 80mm H1A fan push 39.1CFM at only 32db. I cannot write enough good about either heatsinks or the fan, all are top quality.

The Alpha won't fit on that motherboard without grinding down a capacitor with a dremel tool. :Q Thermalright AX-7 does fit however.

The AX-7 is a stellar heatsink, and best of all it uses an 80mm fan.

"Just say no to case fan noise."

Most of these guys here are somewhat unreasonable in recommending a $30-70 heatsink... I myself and many others don't have the option of spending as much on a heatsinkas we do on a case or videocard.

I plan on getting the GC-60 with optional fan at SVCompucycle. The heatsink with low RPM/low dB fan sells for $8. Throw in a variable speed fan for $7 and ASIII for $4.50 and you got a great deal at about $20. The GC60 is a great heatsink that has a copper base and will perform very well for the money.

Ahh, you threw me off with this line...

Just FYI, I have a brand new one sitting in front of me right now and it's completely aluminum. I haven't given it a try yet but it looks like a pretty good unit for the price. I obviously can't comment on the fan noise yet. ;)

I also ordered a fan adapter and the variable-speed 80mm fan for my Volcano 6Cu. It's a nice setup. As soon as I repair my bridges, I'll be able to get a decent temperature comparison.

Edit: The variable speed fan I ordered was the YS-Tech 80mm.

Shoot! You got me there again ObiDon:D.

Originally I intended on getting the Thermal Integration TI-V77L which has the copper core and a fairly quiet fan that blows 34cfm. Then hearing only good things about the GC-68 I decided to go for that, and assumed that it had a copper core too. Alas, it doesn't;), but according to reviews it still holds up its own when u slap on a good fan on it.

ObiDon, how do u like that variable speed YS-Tech 80mm? I heard that it has three settings... how loud is it at the different settings? I put together my rig about 4 months ago and only realized how important silence is when I tried to go to sleep to the droning of my PC encoding a DIVX film. The worst offender is definitely my Matrox HD (ball bearing 740DX) and I really regret not getting a Seagate. But anyway, hows that YS-Tech fan, since I've been considering getting it....

Newegg has $8 coolermaster HSF that will work fine................you can spend a little more and get the Volcano 7 which is $20.......both will work fine..........if you plan on overclocking alpha/thermalright are tops..............if not..........why spend so mucH?

I don't know where you guys shop.

SLK-800 is around $45 at almost all overclocker online stores.
AX-7 I can find for $25 almost all day.
PAL8045A Is easy to find at $35.

Each heatsink requires a fan ($10 Panaflo H1A), and you are on your way.

So when you say we are talking about 70 dollar heatsinks, that may be true, but only if you go to high priced stores.

I just picked up an all copper coolermaster hhc001 from Frys and my CPU temps dropped by 10C from the Antec HSF I was using(which itself is slightly better than the stock AMD fan). Its like $40 and a little big, but I definately reccomend it.

It's not too bad. It comes with a pot attached so it should be continuously variable. At the lowest speed it's inaudible and barely becomes audible at about the halfway point. Even at full speed it doesn't seem very loud at all. It's a low-pitched whine. It *might* bug you if you're trying to take a nap. It depends on how picky you are when you're trying to sleep. At least if it bothers you, you can turn it down until it doesn't!
Really, I just got it in the hope of getting better cooling since it usually gets drowned out by my other fans and systems. :Q
