The Times article appears to point towards suicide.

They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities. The police said they did not suspect foul play. Officials said pills fear found near the body.

I know I'm an inhuman monster or whatever, but if this was suicide, I feel a lot less sorry for the guy. What the hell was so unbearable about his life?

money + success does not equal happiness.

depression is a monster that very few understand.

I won't argue with that. I clearly don't understand depression.

haha, that's what I had originally written, but edited before posting. no reason to be a-hole on this one, i figured ;)

You think they'll still go on with the movie or will they retake his scenes?

WB will release as planned, re-shooting with another actor is pretty much impossible at this point.

Suspected drug overdose?
Place your bets now that it was entirely intentional (objective of course being to get high/stoned/whatever), and not some screwup from his pharmacy.

Is that just part of that whole society of Hollywood? Drugs were legalized there, but we just didn't hear about it.

as has been mentioned a few times, they are well into post-production on this one. if they stumble upon an unlikely need to re-shoot a scene or two, they won't be ones with Ledger in them, or the scenes will just hit the cutting room floor.

Not trying to be a jerk, but I wonder if playing the Joker like, messed him up somehow? The Wikipedia article on the movie mentioned that he basically locked himself in a hotel room for a month trying to "get into" the character, he stopped being able to sleep for more than an hour at a time, etc... I mean, it's possible he was drug addled and crazy before doing that, but I can't imagine it helped.

I just read about this, PLEASE tell me this isn't going to affect the Dark Knight, I've been waiting for that movie for so fucking long. Hopefully it's been done filming for a long time and it's a great movie.

there was a korean actress that committed suicide because she was unable to get out of character for a role she played about 2-3 years ago.

Wow... I don't know what is more shocking: the fact that an otherwise healthy 28-year old is dead, or the fact that quite a few here on ATOT seem far more upset and concerened whether his death will affect an upcoming movie about a comic book character.

The Dark Knight is LATE post-production. They were finished filming last Fall.

The will release the Dark Knight on schedule and it will be dedicated to Heath.

I also think playing the Joker aided in his death.

Mary Kate Olson owned the apartment where he died. According to Buzz.

I don't find it overly shocking really. I mean imagine that... a young, powerful, talented, good looking Hollywood celeb dies... OF A DRUG OD!!???? That's a first! I wouldn't have picked him in a death pool or anything but nobody in Hollywood is safe from this end IMO.

Dark Knight is just fine. Its in post-production at this point so its all wrapped up.
