Heat sink, sinking, sank

So...I'm sitting here in Kentucky which has one of the largest underground cave networks in the country. One place near here actually uses a huge cavern for doing data backup storage for business.

Caves have a fairly consistent temperature, are largely unphased by weather above the ground and are still considerably more accessible than the bottom of the ocean. It just seems like a better way to go than sticking millions of dollars of equipment tethered to some data cables and sinking it to the bottom of the sea.

Interesting idea.

However now I have the song, there is a hole in the bottom of the sea, sung by Elmo stuck in my head. :'(

Microsoft never gave up on you Mr Porter.

Lucky you. I've got the godawful version from that episode of Family Guy as a permanent earworm now. No I'm not going to look it up since I've suffered enough as it is. I've always found strumming acoustic guitar and vocals enormously grating and irritating. Can't explain it.

I don't like the idea of putting hundreds or even thousands of these things in a place where minor temperature differences are extremely sensitive.

SO...Microsoft is trying to warm our oceans with computer equipment? That's totally bypassing the fossil fuel approach to global warming and melting of polar ice. I like it!

That is what I was thinking too. Maybe they can put their equipment by Peru to turn on and off the El Nino. Looks like we in So Cal can use another one next year because this year is not turning out like we had hoped. (I know it is raining up north and filling the reservoirs, but we could use another year like this get get out of the drought. Also it would be nice if it rained more down south)

Seems obvious to me. Machines don't need to breathe, so why not put them under water and out of the way?

I know that nuclear power plants need to keep the temperature variation within certain limits, depending on what body of water they're using for their thermal sink.

Yeah, deploy a datacenter cluster in the ocean, and then in a year or two, find that you can't access it anymore because so much sea life has clustered around it for the warmth, and started to breed like crazy.

Or find another way of causing coral die-offs.

“We measured no heating of the marine environment beyond a few inches from the vessel,” Dr. Lee said.

Well - that's OK then. The heat just disappeared. Nothing to worry about.
