Heat Sink + Fan recommendations for i5

Hey guys,

I just bought my new build, and was debating doing a mild overclock of the i5 processor I got. I read a bunch of reviews / guides on overclocking this sucker, but all of them seem to go for the hardcore OC that requires a heat sink approximately the size of your face.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good heat sinks and/or fans that could be used for a mild overclock? I have very little experience in the field of overclocking, so I don't want to push it, and therefore I don't think I'm going to need a pygmy hippo sized heat sink.

Thanks!

I have this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...65&Tpk=212%20p

Which isn't what you are looking for (it's HUGE) but I've got an i5 that I mildly overclock and I find nothing wrong with 25c temps surfing and watching HD vids.

And for $30 there's room to OC if you want.

Not to mention that it is pretty darned quiet.

And a few bucks left to add a second fan if you want to lower your load temps 3-5C. Unlike some others, I found it easy to install. Good review at Frosty Tech: http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2419

Well, considering I was comparing it to http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/prolimatech-megahalems-cpu-cooler.html, that's still not quite pygmy hippo sized :p Thanks for the recommendation! I'll have to look that one up.

Ok, this'll make me sound like a huge newbie, but I have to ask: what will the second fan do? Would you set it up facing the same direction as the first fan (one pulling, one pushing) to increase the CFM of the air flowing through the HS?

Yes, the original fan pushing, the second pulling, usually towards the back of the case, which should not be a problem with the Hyper 212 with most MBs, since it is not as wide as most other tower heat sinks, and its fan does not block the first ram slot.

I almost went with this heatsink. Good price... excellent reviews. You can also add a second fan if you wanted.

I ended up with the Corsair H50. BestBuy had them for $49.99. A little more expensive.. but keeps everything cool and quiet. The best part is the weight of the cooler is attached to the case itself rather than the cpu mounts.

No love for TRUEs?

:X

OP, we have a saying in my section.
If you have the capacity for cooling, you will use it. :p

So in that sense, we always recomend you getting the biggest sink you can possibly fit/afford.

Why? Because even if you dont do high end OC, the bigger sink will allow quieter fans so you get the best of both worlds.

And when you have friends over, u can blast your fans on high, for bragging rights. :p

How far can Core i5 overclock on the stock box cooler for 24/7 use?

I've been using the Coolermaster Hyper Z600 for quite a while now and had pritty good temps at 3.6 GHz without any fans at all and it isn't pygmy hippo sized but full size hippo sized :)

Else said, why worry about the size of the cooler? The new processors dissipate a lot of heat anyway so small coolers are nolonger an option. Unless your trying to sqeeze the whole thing into a mini case they will usually fit anyways.

Oversized coolers are quiet when used for a mild overclock. Who cares about the size when the case is closed anyways.

Why when the Prolimatech Megahalem is a bit better for a few dollars less?
Most places I have seen, the Megahalem is more, but it is better. The TRUE is $55 @ svc.com, and the mega is $62 (I got it there for $60)

I never really looked at svc I will admit. Generally everywhere I looked the TRUE is about $5 more money.
