This is why I'm not too concerned about the PTW nature of this game. Might make it easier/quicker for people to be good, but cards are no substitute for actual skill in deck building and strategy.

True, but you have to play quite a bit to even have access to more than the most basic of cards.

I effing suck at this game lol.

Yesterday I played 6 games...won 2 lost 4...the 4 I lost I conceded since every turn I couldn't do shit. No minions under 6 mana, had Equality but no Consecration, I could just kill one minion and leave like 3-4 there to bash my face open.

Here's my deck:

2x Noble Sacrifice (1)
1x Argent Protector (2)
2x Equality (2)
1x Holy Light (2)
1x Ironbeak Owl (2)
1x Novice Engineer (2)
1x Acidic Swamp Ooze (2)
1x Aldor Peacekeeper (3)
1x Big Game Hunter (3)
1x Scarlet Crusader (3)
2x Consecration (4)
2x Truesilver Champion (4)
1x Hammer of Wrath (4)
1x Defender of Argus (4)
1x Faceless Manipulator (5)
2x Azure Drake (5)
1x Argent Commander (6)
1x Avenging Wrath (6)
1x The Black Knight (6)
1x Sylvanas Windrunner (6)
1x Sunwalker (6)
1x Guardian of Kings (7)
1x Lay on Hands (8)
1x Tirion Fordring (8)
1x Ragnaros (8)

What is wrong?!!??!?!
Should I replace the Scarlet Crusader (3) for a Silvermoon Guardian (4)?
Should I add a Questing Adventurer and hope he get boosted enough to survive and deal some hurt?
Should I remove the Argent Protector (2) and get a Shattered Sun Cleric (3) instead?
Should I try to squeeze another taunter like Sen'Jin Shieldmasta in there?

Or do I simply suck and should be happy with Rank 17-18?!?!!?

Something must be wrong cause when I lose it's always horrible and I can do almost nothing most of the turns...and when I win it's horrible for the other player. It's Black and White, nothing grey, no close games, no awesome moments where you don't know what will happen and the game can turn any direction...

True. Just ran across a legendary against another player in casual, we were both low level, so he must have gotten really lucky, or bought it. Fortunately it was his last turn before death, so he didn't get chance to use it.

Too many 1X, your hands aren't going to consistent. What are you going for with this deck?

just finished the tutorial. it's like I'm 14 again learning MTG for the first time. Picked it up in about 5 minutes.

Now that I'm done with the tutorial...

40 packs for 50 bucks. Seems reasonable...

That 40 packs will get you a great deck. I would recommend finishing all the practice stuff first though. Get each hero up to 10 before buying anything. That will give you all the class specific stuff you need. Then, if you still like the idea, the 40 packs will give you the ability to craft pretty much the deck you want. Perhaps, you won't get all the legendaries you require, but you will have a great start.

IMHO, you're curved WAY too high. Way too many 5+ drops. You described having to concede because you had nothing to play turn after turn. That's why. Build a deck with the majority of cards costing 2-4 mana. Try limiting your 5+ mana cost cards to 5-7 total. This way you'll be able to get started before turn 4 or 5. Good luck!

Here's the new deck after some thought. I removed Holy Light and Noble Sacrifice and added some more minions instead. I've yet to try it but probably will soon.

2x Equality (2)
2x Argent Protector (2)
1x Ironbeak Owl (2)
1x Novice Engineer (2)
2x Sunfury Protector (2)
2x Wild Pyromancer (2)
1x Aldor Peacekeeper (3)
1x Big Game Hunter (3)
1x Scarlet Crusader (3)
2x Turesilver Champion (4)
2x consecration (4)
1x Hammer or Wrath (4)
1x Defender of Argus (4)
2x Azure Drake (5)
1x Faceless Manipulator (5)
1x Avenging Wrath (5)
1x Argent Commander (6)
1x Sunwalker (6)

1x Lay on Hands (8)
1x Ragnaros (8)
1x Tirion Fordring (8)

It's getting to the point where as soon as I see a hunter I just concede. They are so fucking OP when they just build with nothing but beast powers.

Yeah they're powerful that's true.
But me like Equality+Pyro OR Consecration when they pull out trajillions of beasts!

need taunts that can absorb damage and board clears

Hunter decks definitely strong in lower ranks

But a lot of the times you'll draw a hand that has absolutely no chance. But the hunters have so many stupid beast combos that it seems they can pretty much draw any order and have you dominated.

That is true though.
They can take control early on and keep it if you're not lucky on your card draws...which is often the case.

Looks like the Hunter is more "forgettable" since you can always spawn some cheap douchy beasts here and there.

Pardon the obvious - how do you tell what rarity a card is?

Also - what happens to packs you buy during beta - With gold? With cash?

Good advice here. I'm really liking hearthstone, but it's good to get some more time under your belt before you try to build out a deck like that. That way you'll have a better idea of what you want. Coming from MTG is a good start, though, I'm sure you already have a "style" of deck you like best.

It stays with you. The last wipe to the game was before I even got into the closed beta, and when that occurred, they simply gave you back all the gold that you ever spent in the game. I recall TB going on a huge pack binge after he got his gold back!

This. In the event they bother with a wipe again (which, IIRC, they stated another wouldn't happen), any gold or money you've spend would be refunded to your account and you'd be free to buy the content again. I think the only "wipe" they are going to do is the rankings in ranked play. I believe they wanted more of a league type system, and each new league will also introduce new cards. You will keep your deck, and just have your rank reset.

They only give you back the gold that you purchased with real money. I certainly hope there is another wipe since the 40 packs I bought only gave me one legendary card...

Crafting is your friend then!

I bought a lot of packs, too much to be honest. Off the packs I bought I got Gruul, Sylvanas and The Black Knight. I DE'd all my gold cards and got enough Dust to craft Ragnaros and Tirion, plus some other useful cards like Wild Pyromancer, Argent Protector (Paladin), etc.

I also got Ysera off the second free pack I got after the tutorial and leveling some classes.

So give back only IRL cash cards? Not cards earned though gold earned though play/quests?

Been playing on play mode. Got my Mage to lvl10 and priest to lvl9. I don't know if people really suck or if I'm really good, but i definitely win way more than I lose using only the basic decks.

Deck building seems so daunting right now.

Must be a lot of noobs pouring money into the game since it went open. Been hanging out for a couple days just playing some games in casual to do dailies and seeing a lot of decks stacked with rares and up, but played in a way that it doesn't seem like they've played many games yet.

I'd think the standard Blizzard players are pretty willing to spend money. Remember WoW's pay to get a mount that shattered sales records? I can easily see a bunch of the players coming in and saying "well, $50 isn't that much, so I'll do it!" and getting a decent starting deck without much knowledge of how to play.

it appears as though it's not like you gain a lot by buying packs.

At a slow grind, I was able to earn enough for a pack and a half yesterday. So the $50/40 packs only speeds the process by a month.

it most certainly doesn't feel PTW, just PT-GetThereFaster

Arena is great right now thanks to the open beta.

Even with terrible decks I am going 7+ wins and getting my gold back.
