Something is wrong if, when you have a resting heart rate in the normal range, and it goes up to 160 and stays there, even after you stop moving, for more 5 minutes, right? My brother's heart rate (He is 13) went down to 125 after 30 minutes, and even after an hour it was still 120. That's bad, right? He is at the hospital emergency room right now, and is having tests done. He seems to be fine now, which is why I left him with my parents. What do you think the tests will show? He is in physically good shape (probably the best athlete in his grade), and I'm a little worried. He had mild asthma, like I did, when he was a little younger.

Is it safe for my heart rate to go to 190? When I do cardio on the bike machine I peak at ~190 bpm. Age 24, 165 lbs, 6-0.

I?m no doctor, but it sounds like he?s having some type of anxiety attack. Has he been under a lot of stress lately? Stress does funny things to people all the time. Anyways, I hope your brother is okay. I?m sure it?s nothing to worry about. : )

Does seem a little out of the ordinary. As long as he wasn't having chest pains it shouldn't be too immediately important.

190 is a little too high. You're max should be more like 180, but I'd aim for more like 175. At your age 190 isn't too bad as long as its not for extended periods (15+ minutes) and you do it regularly (2-3 times per week). Taking time off for a few weeks and coming back to that rate is hard on your heart.

General guideline for calculating maximum heart rate:

220 - Age = Maximum Heart Rate
