hearing protection

What do you guys use for hearing protection when out shooting? I have an old pair of muffs that are really uncomfortable and i'd like to get something better. i keep seeing all these different brands of electronic muffs that allow low level sound like speech but protect against loud sounds like a gun going off.

i think i'd prefer a normal non-electric muff because i don't want to have to worry about batteries or charging.

I find that earmuffs interfere too much with glasses.

I use ordinary foam earplugs, you can easily find them in the >30 db suppression range for like $8 a bottle.

yeah, these mess with my glasses too, but i hate those foam earplug things. i can never get them in properly.

Do you insert them straight into the ear, or do you have to angle them? I noticed I have to angle my IEMs upward to really get them snug into my ears.

I just put them straight in there... if it's angled, they'll expand to the angle.

Well that's two different things - my IEM's are custom molded so no problems there. Earplugs can be custom molded too and this is THE recommended way for those with frequent lifestyle and course of duty that encounter lots of noise. You will be much better off 20 years down the road.

i know how they work, but i still have trouble with getting them in properly and staying in. I'm not a big fan of inserting things into any of my orifices either.

I've used some like that (not those in particular) and they are a decent alternative for those who like electronic muffs. A lot of guns just can't accomodate a full headset, so plugs are needed. These are baffled so you can still hear pretty well, and when enough air (sound) moves across them it shuts and blocks the impulse sound.

I UH double up UH UH!

I use an in ear set ofHearos as well as a pair of Howard Leight L3s.

A little spendy but well worth it in my opinion...

As for ear plugs, I generally roll them up between the tips of my forefinger and thumb, and then insert them in my ear about as far as they can go, and let them expand. Makes a huge difference on the db reduction...

I use the electronic muffs. They work great and dont seem to interfere with my shots in anyway. I got the cheap little $20 jobs from Sportsmans Guide and they're so nice I dont need the really expensive ones.

If I felt the need to use plugs, I would try and find something like I had issued in the Navy: rubber triple-flange sized for my ear canal. They clean easily and work VERY well.
