So last night I'm watchin TV and all of a sudden I heard a loud POP and it kind of scard me, then the color on the screen turned black/white. like 2 seconds later I started to hear a loud spinning/fan sound from the back of my tv. i turned it off then back on and same thing, was black and white with the same humming sound going on.

This is a Samsung DLP from 2005. Does this mean my color wheel has gone bad? I did a quick search last night right before I went to sleep (when this happened) and I'm pretty confident that is the issue.

If so does anyone know where I can buy these things B&M or is it a part that I will have to order online and install myself?

Thanks in advance.

well there is some odd effects, like almost looking like an old school movie sometimes heh. but other times it looks okay, maybe a tad blurry or something.

yep, sounds like your plastic color wheel bit the farm. Easy to replace as mentioned above. And not too expensive either!

welp finally got around to taking it apart today, and yea it was definitely the color wheel

thing was pretty shattered to shit. buncha glass from the color wheel was just sitting down in the holder area, didn't get a pic of that before i cleaned it but here is the wheel shattered as hell.

just ordered the replacement now for $145'ish with 2 day shipping. should be pretty straight forward to get it back together, i wrote the steps down as i did it. i also followed a different guide which was on youtube because the one linked above is for a different model than mine.

I've also got a Samsung DLP bought in February 2006 - I'm actually hopeful that my TV dies soon so I can upgrade (want to go to 55" from my current 42"). Maybe I just don't watch enough television...

It probably won't actually die for a long time. You could sell it or donate it to charity and take a tax deduction.

FWIW, i bought my DLP back at Thanksgiving 2004 ... $2750 on sale for a 50" 720p HD ready DLP heh.

my bulb went out probably 6-8 months ago, and I leave my TV on A LOT. like im talking all day on the weekends sometimes. i was surprised to get so much out of it in all honesty. when I got a new bulb TV definitely looked a lot brighter.

i'm anxious to see with this new color wheel if it will look any better than it did before it crapped out on me.

i really did not want to spend $$ on a new tv now so I'm just happy I can fix this myself and keep this one alive, for a fraction of a new TV.

Do you have a sense for how long your TV had been losing brightness? Was it an abrupt change just before the bulb conked out or had it been slowing getting dark? I have a TON of hours on my original bulb on my own Samsung 50" DLP, and an extra bulb sitting on my entertainment center. If it would actually improve the look of the set I'd just pop it in despite the fact that the original one still works.

it was just something i honestly didn't realize until i would go to my brothers to watch NFL on sundays then i'd come home and see my tv and just how dull it was in comparison. it was something that gradually happened, wasn't sudden at all. he had a newer DLP than mine.

if you have a brand new one, you could very easily just swap it out in like 5 mins to see if there is any difference.

Don't be like me and reassemble the TV with a speck of dirt on the lens. I see it during very dark scenes as a white splotch about 3" wide near the center of my screen. It's way too much work to fix something minor like that though... maybe when I replace my bulb!

DLP IS BACK IN BUSINESS!

it does seem to be a little more vivid color wise for sure. i am probably going to adjust the color but for now i'm just watchin the playoffs and it works haha.

took me about 40 minutes to put the new color wheel in (after i had already taken the old one out). well worth the $260 I saved on having someone else do it!

If you've been using the TV since 2005, you'd almost certainly notice a difference. Try it out and report back!
