I just got back from the neurologist. He had no problem with me not giving him records of the tests ran by my previous doctors and just telling him. He did a full body reflex test including using a pin for sensation. He said a lot of the symptoms I gave him could match a lot of different things. He said he's ordering multiple MRIs of different areas. Here's to hoping that my insurance covers this. They'll either cover it all, or not cover it at all.

A few of you sent me PMs, and I'm sorry for not responding until now.

In regards to this being a mental problem, I really don't think so as to the amount of pain and weird symptoms I've had, but I'm not going to say I don't have anything. All I know is something's wrong.

yes, but mental problems can manifest in real pain, or atlest what one would intrepet as pain. i mean, if we want to get technical, all pain is mental

to the OP, i am glad you went to the neurologist, but man, you may need to rethink your gf status, maybe look for someone else, with the way she bosses you around when you have significant problems is not good, and she will probably just get worse as time goes on.

but don't rule out mental problems, keep an open mind, it may be a little of this and a little of that and then, wham, you have a severe problem. look at people who have panic attacks, they think they are having heart attacks because of all weird sensations they are experiencing, but it turns out a quick shot or pill of something like valium or mophine and all is good. personally, i would seek out a little mental assitance because regardless of what your problem is, you are experiencing stress, anxiety and maybe a little bit of depression because of it, which would be natural.

I've put her through complete hell recently with everything. As you probably know, it hasn't been easy on anyone close to me who knows about this -- especially her. I love her more than anyone, and even to this day after all of the tests and things I've been through, she's still supportive. She isn't perfect in regards to handling this, but I don't think anybody would be. I know what you're saying though, and you have a good point.

speaking for myself, i think your gf needs to be a little more understanding. have been where you are in terms of medical problems that more than 1 dr didn't what it was, my wife has been through hell with me and never once had she suggested i don't go get this help or that help, you just might want to kick back a little from the situation and maybe re-read this entire thread, what you have conveyed here doesn't make your gf out to be too supportive.

unfortunately many people won't be too understanding unless they have been through it, the pain, fear, anxiety, stress, depression all at the same time. honestly my ailment has made me a better person in that way. 6-7 years ago i might have responded like JOhnny.

Honestly man, she's not being at all supportive if she's saying she'll break up with you if you seek a certain type of help. Objectively, that sounds like she doesn't want to be involved with anyone who has psychological issues.

No one has to be perfect, but to threaten to leave you for any reason does not bode well for your future...

My advice, for what it's worth, don't listen to her and if she threatens you again, leave her.

some people just like to beleive that only "crazy" people have mental problems, when in reality, most people would benefit by seeing a psychologist(counselor, no drugs or maybe some drugs recommendations to your family dr) , but not necessarily a psychartrist (usually will always presribe drugs, in my experience i have always had a hour long first visit followed by 15min "med checks" afterward, they don't want to hear your problems like a psychologist)

i wouldn't question the neurologist, if you don't think you need what he suggest, i doubt he will want to help you and he has a reason for requesting the mri, not just because he is board. you could have a disc problem or any sort of problem, if you dont take his advice, good luck 🙁

Quite honestly it does sound like anxiety/depression.

It affects you in very similar symptoms.

The tests are definitely a good idea, it's just a matter of coverage by insurance.

I have MRIs now scheduled in two locations. One is in my hometown next Monday (just of my head, that I requested through my regular doc) during a day I have off work, and supposedly is okay thus far with insurance (but we'll have to see if they pay for it or not).

I also have the other ones with the neurologist (3 of them total!!), which also will be thrown at my insurance.

Hopefully this doesn't throw up a red flag or anything, and I have to decide which ones I want to get done.

also, have you had an mri before? if you have claurstrophobia talk to your dr about some type of sedative/axiety med like xanax or valium.

I don't have a common ins carrier.. I don't want to really give much details on here abou that, though. As for the MRI, I've never had one before, I'll be sure to ask about that though. What I'm really concerned about is the cost. If my ins doesn't pick up the tab, these 3 MRIs could easily cost almost $10,000... and I'd go bankrupt.

I was at home on leave from my job for about a week or so.. it helped a little, but I dunno... good thought, and I guess I'll find out later... but for it to be some allergy/mold, it would have to be pretty severe.

A few things.

1) I can't tell what type of medical center you are going to. Is it a large one, perhaps one attached to a research university? If not, make sure to travel to one where they have more resources.

2) An MRI probably costs around 1000 before insurance, but you CAN negotiate with the hospitals/doctors just like the inurance companies do (in case your insurance won't cover it). They can likely take a lot off the bill, and in some cases may even waive the bill if you can prove you cannot pay it (not all places will do this, but it is worth a shot if you really do not have the resources but need the care). However, I would try that after you go in.

I really hope you can find out what's causing this and correct it. I know from less-serious types of medical issues I have experienced that one doctor can be completely clueless (even if they are trying to be helpful) while another can zone in on it immediately. So keep trying!

It may sound crazy but it's possible and can be very dangerous. I understand it doesn't kill right away and has symptoms like what you have. If insurance covers it, I don't see any problem getting tested just to be safe, you know?

As others have said a neurologist/psychiastrist is the best doctor. The mind is so dang powerful. Stress drains chemicals in the body to the point that your feel the pain your body experiences everyday. Most "normal" people don't feel this. But once stress has taken its tole the body is in constant fight/flight reaction 24x7 and it takes its toll.

I know it sounds silly, but I went through it and it isn't fun. It doesn't need a particular event to trigger, just chemistry.

Of all the outlandish descriptions I'll putt money on anxiety/depression.

no doubt he is suffering that too, but the question is did the pain cause the anxiety/depression of did the anxiety/depression cause the pain? regardless of how it started any mental test he takes now will show high stress/anxiety levels whick can mislead drs unless you have a decent psychologist to explain the test very carefully and not just say "he is suffering from anxiety and depression". if that happens they will put him on zoloft, paxil or lexapro or some other serotonin reuptake inhibitor and his sex drive will probably fall into the toilet, which will cause more anxiety, unfortunately been there done that 🙁
