health and dental insurance....

PAIN IN THE ARSE when you gotta get it on your own. So many little companies that want to reel you in... no idea if they're legit. This is taking me too long... maybe I'll just bite and do bluecross... argh.. if anyone would have any suggestions (short of finding a different job), feel free to suggest away...

rant over

how much does it run?

Dental you're pretty much out of luck on your own. Some dentists do offer a discount if you pay by check the day that you have the work done.

For medical, blue cross is probably safest. "Shifty Bob's Full-Coverage Medical" probably won't pay out if you ever try to use it, the fine print will include some weasel clauses.

Could always go to Mexico for dental work

Yup. The whole purpose of insurance companies is NOT to take care of the customer, its to make money for the company.
Get blue cross/blue shield. They may charge a lot, but at least you'll be taken care of.

Which is the whole point of insurance anyway.

dental is hard to come by. my mother and father have been employed for as long as i've been alive and never in their job histories has a dental plan been offered.

of my three past jobs, no dental plan has been offered.

on the contrary, my husband's company offers dental insurance.

therefore, i can understand that it's harder to get if you're on your own.

At the small company where I work, the only coverage they could get for any sane price was just to go to blueshield's special dental clinics, not to a good dentist of your choice.

Since none of us wanted low-bid dentists mangling our teeth, the company dropped the dental coverage and just added the money into our profit sharing.

As people have said, its very difficult to get individual dental insurance.

Don't bother with any of those "$19.99 dental plan", no dentist will accept those.
Legitimate dental insurance companies make you wait >6 months before they will paid for some of the major work done.
It make sense cause one can just join, have tons of work done, then cancel.
