Headset, soundcards, sound outputs..etc

Hi guys, i'm having a bit of a problem

I use a device called Line 6 TonePort GX to plug in my guitar into it, which in turn is connected to the computer by USB. It acts as a sort of external sound card. My mobo has a onboard sound card but i use this device instead because of guitar playing/recording. It has one speaker output which i have used to connect my 2 speakers

But now i've bought a Creative Fat1lity (or something) gaming headset, which has two plugs, one pink for the mic and one green for the sound output. I can't connect the pink plug to the Line 6 device... I can connect it to the back of my PC, but then the other plug can't be connected to device, only to the case/mobo.

My case has two holes, one pink and one green, on the front, but i'm not sure they actually connect anything because there's no sound on the headset nor does the mic work when i connect it there (and it works if i connect to the back).

I want to be able to switch between having sound output on my speakers and on the headset... But i'm not seeing how i can do without constantly connecting and disconnecting the plugs on the rear of the case, which isn't very good because the way it's placed doesn't make it very confortable to get my hands there.

So.. Is there a way to get those holes in the front working? Or what options do i have?

You may be able to use the front plugs if they are connected to the motherboard's sound card.

Windows normally sends sounds to the "default" audio device, which right now is the Line 6. You need to tell Windows to switch that to the onboard (probably "Realtek") sound device when you want to use the Fatality. Then switch back to the Line 6 when recording.

Google "set default audio device" or similar to find instructions and pictures.

Damn, now i'm having trouble with the mic

the sound output works fine but i'm having problems setting up the microphone. It doesn't seem to be picking up any sound. The mic button is turned on..it's plugged to the correct jack, where i used my previous headset which worked.

As you can see on the screen i am going to post, there are "signs" of life.. the green bars on the windows 7 panel thingie. when it's off there's one, when i turn it on it maxes out for 1 second and goes down to 2 bars. Talking to it doesn't change anything and nobody can hear me. Dunno what can be wrong, if the mic was broken shouldn't there be no recognition at all on the volume-side?

Well, any kind of electrical noise that the cable itself is picking up could induce an audio signal. Similarly, plugging and unplugging the cable will cause a decent "pop" sound to be sent to the sound card. Do you have another machine (perhaps a laptop?) that you could test the mic with?

You might need to switch the "recording" device from the Line 6.

In Windows 7 at least, if you right-click on the system tray volume control there are separate menu items for playback devices and recording devices.
