headset or earbuds for gaming?

I hate ear buds. They fall out and after a while they start to hurt. Get the headphones.
 
you should be able to hear the same 'running around the corners' with a good headset.

it doesn't even need to be a 5.1 headset

comfort, as others pointed out, is also a big factor.
 
a good set of in ears will probably let you hear better, because they tend to cut out all the outside noise. however your normal ipod earbuds will suck for comfort (as noted above). just depends on the quality of your stuff.
