I didn't see this posted here, and I noticed a few MMORPG threads on the first page. Just thought I'd give a heads up to anyone who might be interseted.

I started playing EQ again after experiencing the suck that is SWToR (imo). I played back in the 2000-2004 era, and it's a vastly different game now. I feel the changes are great improvements for the most part.

Ton of content to mess around with for free. Graphics aren't that great, but the art style, animations, etc are all good. The spell effects especially are still the coolest in any MMO style game I've played.

There's a new server launching when it goes F2P as well for those folks who would want a fresh start.

Anyways, give it a shot.

I tried it with the last progression server launch (about a year ago), and overall I loved the game and mechanics, but I hated the community.

95% of the people on the server were greedy SOBs, who only helped or did anything provided they got anything out of it. Not to mention alot of people box, and in general I don't mind boxing to fill up a group, but when the group is the boxers, with maybe you as the 6th member of the group, then it just bothered me.

I might try the F2P because there would likely be alot more people (and who didn't box) and with the mercenaries in the game might reduce the need to box. It would be hard for me to go back even with it F2P.

If the new server was a progression server they might bring back thousands of players. Even here there are often threads on how easy MMO's have gotten.

Very interesting but not for me at this point... Eq2 meets my need for an MMO and I took advantage of their SC (the sony cash) sale earlier in 2012 to buy a years' subscription for 50$. Then I used in-game currency to buy more SC cards from players to buy the expansions and get a second paid account. I expect now that with both accounts I'll be able to make enough ingame money to hopefully never need to pay again and still get the full membership.

For anyone that hasn't played Everquest, it's absolutely worth a look.

I might have to check this out.

I was always an AC snob, but that seems like several lifetimes ago.

The catch is that you can only play 4 classes from 4 races unless you pay up. With a max # of characters of 4, and 4 bag slots on each character. They like the number 4 apparently. If you pay cash, you can buy more to unlock.

Also, the free version allow max 1000AAs only, limit the amount of platinums. Unless SOE allows people to buy AA and platinum unlocks to increase the limit, the free version is nothing more than a massive trail version that in the end, if you want to progress, you will need to pay monthly fee.

AA unlockers are coming. It will be interesting to see the price points.

And let's be serious... if you play solo, you aren't hitting 1K AA on a brand new character any time soon. Not saying people are going to be playing solo, but it took me 6 weeks to get 1500 AA and I had some PLing AND I was three boxing.

A silver player could play for a few months without ever spending any money. F2P isn't for hardcore players. It's not for hardcore players in any game. These people are the ones who subscribe. People who are more casual or have less time to dedicate to the game will benefit greatly from F2P.

six weeks boxing is pretty slow if it's since they added the aa bonus. I've done 1000aa in about a 7hr powerleveling session. Now that is true powerleveling with several boxes dedicated to it.

There's been a few posts on the newbie boards about people recently returning and soloing with a merc to 85 as a cleric and about 700aa in 4 weeks. It's still not easy compared to other MMOs but it's far easier these days.

Is it worth starting a Bard on Xegony server or should I just go to the new progression one?

Vox is probably worth a look. Luclin is also a more populated older server.

Progression means you need to put up with slow leveling etc..

With the servers losing population the way they are rumored to be doing, it's a bit of shock to learn of yet another brand new server. Be prepared for low pop questing (always fun).

Purely cosmetic I know, and gameplay rules over graphics etc. etc. But have they ever reskinned this game so it doesnt look like Atari 2600 Adventure? Just curious.

They get progressively better as you go through expansions. I haven't gone anywhere in the new expansion (Veil of Alaris), but I've done a lot of the previous expansion (House of Thule). The graphics aren't bad at all. I like the art and animation style or whatever. I think the spell effects are honestly the coolest in any game of the genre.

If you play it maxed out, I think it looks pretty good in new zones. The shadows and stuff look cool.

Just a note for those that don’t want to play this game do to the outdated graphics, I maxed out the settings on my dell 2711 monitor and they are very good not as good as a lot of the newer ones but still things like spells being casted still look very good.

I haven’t got out of the newbie zone yet do to work, so I can’t say what the older areas or mobs look like.
